i i j 1 , ; ; J I i : ; ! ; i i . I ; i r : : : THE SHORT CAREER IN RACING OF THIS YEARS FUTURITY WINNER 4, : Had Trojan not won the Futurity of this year bo would have been considered one of the moderately useful two-year-olds capable of winning a purse now and then when favorably placed. But he did win tlii Futurity and, although that is. tlie only race he won, there is no getting away from the fact that In it lie defeated several of the already" proved good ones of his age. It may be and probably is the case, that bis marked ability --o run- especially well in heavy going was the deciding factor in giving him bis one great success. However that may be, he Is entitled to all the glory accruing from his success in the richest prize of tlie year for two-year-olds and "mayhap in the racing of 1915 he will prove his victory Was no fluke. All liic lwssibilities of a young -horse are before him and he Is well bred enough to do anything. His sire and Lis dam were Doth stake winners in their racing days and trace right back to the most distinguished names known in the annals of the -sport. Trojan was bred by II. T. Oxnard and when a yearling was sold at auction to the Quincy Stable for ?1.250. Under all the circumstances It was decidedly a profitable investment. Nine Sir Wilfred yearlings found new owners at that sale and of them all he brought tlie highest price. His first start was In a race at Belmont Park, June 1, in which he was second choice, but ran unplaced to Comely, Gloaming and Jester, at live-eighths of a Oiile straight, run iir 1:00. The fact that lie was second choice in the betting suggests that ho must have shown well in private. However, lie was beaten something over six lengths. His next race was at the sdnie track, Juue 4. The distance was four and a half furlongs over a sloppy track. Coupled with his stable mate, Double Eagle, he was a 12 to 1 outsider in the betting and ran second to James Butlers colt, Kilkenny Boy,- which won in a canter by six lengths. Although badly beaten here, there was still some merit in. Trojans performance, for there was good winning form behind him In tlie fast filly, Sea Sheli, to fiay nothing of Distant Shore and Fair Helen. This was the only occasion in which lie was placed in a race prior to tlie running of the Futurity. He ran unplaced in the Grab Bag Handicap-, at Piping Rock, June i, and. was not started again until August 22, at Saratoga, in the Hopeful Stakes, at three-quarters of a mile. In this he carried 107 pounds and ran a fairly creditable race, finishing fifth ti Regret, 127 pounds; Andrew M., 114; Pebbles. 130. and Bill Dudley, 107. Midway of the homestretch hi was leading, but at tlie finish was eight lengths behind the winner. The track was heavy that day. as it was on Futurity day, the three-quarters being run in 1:10. In the Futurity lie carried ten pounds more and won In l:lo. The conclusion that he must have improved greatly between the running of the Hopeful and the Futurity is obvious. In the Futurity he carried 117 pounds, and the other starters, their weights and their places in the order of the finish were Kaskaskia. 120 pounds; Harry Junior. 122: Trial by Jury. 125: Sea Shell, 127: Roily, 117: Polish. 122: Pan Maid. 114: Dinah Do. 114; Spun Glass. 117; Ivy Marquette, 114; Garbage, 125, r.nu The Finn. 119. In this race Polish and The Finn ran in the name and interest of the wealthy English owner, Louis Winans. There was not much contention. Sea Shell led to the far turn, where Trojan raced past her into a gcod lead and, drawing -away in the stretch, won pulling up by three lengths from Kaskaskia, she beating Harry Junior by four lengths for second money. Having won what he was pointed for, Trojan was then retired from racing for the year. Trojan is a thoroughly well-bred young horse. The Epsom Derby winners, Ormonde,. Bend Of, - Kingcraft, Blair Athol. Votigenr. Doncaster, Macaroni, Blink Bonny and Surpilco figure; in the "first "fiv6 generations of his ancestry. Sir Wilfreds dam, Plumeria, was a daughter of the Scottish Chief hqrso,- Eagles Plume, which stood on a ranch in Alberta with quite a band of thoroughbreds, all of Avliich were reputed to be the property of the then Prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward VII. Plumcri-as-Sister May W., was a famous sprinter over Chicago tracks and is now a broodmare in England. Bohemias sire. Wagner, was a son of the Immortal Prince Charlie and also th sire of such stars as Imp and Pat Dunnes great racer, Flying Dutchman. Her grand dam, Jaconet, was a s-iter to the Epoui Derby winner, Iroquois, If there is any soft place In Trojans pedigree it .comes through Faustus. The latter, like his famous son, Cesai-iOii, sired many precociously speedy horses which could sprint grandly, but as a rule, did. not stay well. However, not all of his progeny were merely sprinters, and stout and staying liiiesCareabundaiitly manifest in-Trojans pedigree.
