ONE LONE FAYORITE WINS LONG SUCCESSION OF LOSING CHOICES AT PALMETTO PARK FINALLY IS BROKEN. Harry Shaw, Odds-on Choice, .Accounts For Handicap That Serves as Feature and Incidentally Reduces Track Record for Mile and Twenty Yards. Charleston, S. C. December !. K. E. Watkins Harry Shaw broke the long sequence of losing favorites at Palmetto Park when he cantered home a winner iu the mile and twenty yards handicap for which he was an outstanding choice. Incidentally, he demonstrated that lie was much the best, for he won hard held after having led for the entire trip and likewise reduced the former track record of 1:43, held by Joe Deibold to 1:42. Cliff Field was his closest attendant for the entire trip and landed in second place with Joe Finn third. Joe "Finn might have been more formidable, but Lafferty was unprepared at the start and had both feet knocked out of the stirrup irons. This handicap was too much for the Herbert racer to overcome. As a secondary feature Secretary Nathanson provided a handicap under selling conditions at six fulongs, and it resulted in a victory for Ancon, which Archie Zimmer acquired only yesterday. OHagan was second and Undaunted, the latter a receding favorite, third. Big fields of the poorer grade of horses contested the remaining four races and unavoidable crowding, coupled with bad riding, contributed to the frequent upsets that developed. The stewards issued a ruling after the fifth race, barring Czar Michael from further starting here on on account of his bleeding propensities and Prospect because of his seemingly unlit condition. J. O. Talbott today sold the two-year-old Fair IIe.2n to Clyde Phillips. Mr. Talbott will further reduce his string preparatory to shipping to Cuba and he will dispose or about ten more of his horses by auction in the paddock some day next week. The condition book for the first eight days of the. Havana meeting will be distributed among the horsemen on Monday next. There will be three ,000, four 00 and two 00 overnight handicaps. The remaining purses will be 00.
