CHARLESTON TRACK BETTER PALMETTO PARK COURSE DRIES OUT WITH RETURN OF SUNSHINE. Ladies Bay Sees One of the Biggest Crowds of the Season at South Carolina Track and Races Are Closely Contested. Charleston, S. C, December 22. Ladies day, coupled with line weather that prevailed, accounted lor one - f the largest crowds at Palmetto Park today that has witnessed the sport here this season. The gathering included many first time visitors to this city who had stopped off enroute to Florida for the winter. The increased patronage was rellected in tlie betting ring, which did a lively business, but I he good fortune of the public in landing on nearly all the winners contributed towards a big delicit for the quoters of odds. The sport was really interest lug, the track having dried out to an extent where it gave every starter equal opportunity. Some of the finishes were close and highly exciting. There were no outstanding features on the program. The sport began with a victory for Martin Casca over A. C. Haley and El Diod. Tim latter, making hs initial start here, was a supposed "good thing, but a delayed beginning enabled the winner to scurry into a long lead which El Diod failed to overcome, though he came with a sensational rush in the last furlong and was barely beaten by A. C. Haley for second place. Sureget. which on previous occasions here had been decidedly deficient in speed, took tlie purse in the second in handy fasiiion. Peunyrock and .L D. Harrcll made a thrilling contest of the third, with Peunyrock just getting up for the purse. Coppertown, after acting badly at the post, received the best of tlie start and led all the way in the fourth. The tiftli went to Elizabeth Hanvood, which paced the others from the start. T. I. Williams, tiaiuer for It. P. Dodson, was taken sick this morning and was removed to his home. .T. D. Harrcll, which was claimed by .1. W. Hed-rick the other day, ran in the name and interest of It. E. Wntkins this afternoon. The gelding was transferred to Mr. Watkins yesterday. Jockey Corey was taken sick this afternoon and was forced to cancel his engagements. Chas. K. Grainger, in the stable of J. O. Tal- Jiinked on the side- of his head this morn-ug rliutlxiiae nud the frontal bone was fractured. This means that the horse will ho U nun-starter for- a couple of months at least, Tlie going was on the slow side this morning, but several creditable works were recorded, amougst which were: Dayborry Candle Seven-eighths in 1:30.
