f ; COMPLETE STATISTICS OF THE ENGLISH RACING SEASON RECENTLY CLOSED tit tit ; - i L . I , . ? - l - " "I - Tlie English Mat-racing season of 1914 came to an end November 2S. Up to the time of tlie outbreak of the distinctive war now waging the campaign had gone along in its usual lines according to the dates allotted by the Jockey Club. With the declar-: ation of war a period of doubt and hesitation ensued as to what was best to be done and for a time it appeared that racing might be abandoned. King George did much to save the situation by ordering Ills horses to be kept in racing, as Well as expressing the opinion it was best for nil concerned to carry it on, as though conditions ware normal. So in tlie long run the .sport was continued to its usual date of closing, but in tile meantime over twenty allotted meetings were abandoned. Including such important ones as the York Summer meeting, Western meeting at Ayr, Newbury Autumn meeting, Newbury November meeting. Kempton Park Second Summer meeting, Derby Summer meeting. Hurst Park August meeting, Stockton Summer meeting and Rodcar Second Summer meeting, all of which had valuable stake races that also went overboard to the loss of owners. One feature highly pleasing to Englishmen of al! ranks was the fact that King George hud his most successful year since his accession to the throne. In 1011 his horses won ,245, In 1012 0,040, in 191.! 2,400, while this year they won the highly satisfactory total of S,722. much of which fell to his splendid two-year-old colt. Friar Marcus. Anticipation points to Ills possible fame as a future Epsom Derby winner and if this entirely reasonable expectation Is realized next year it will surely be met with striking manifestations of exultant loyalty. Nothing more desirable for the sport could " " happen. For the second year in succession J. B. Joel brought up In liossession of tlie coveted distinction of heading the list of .winning owners,, no one being even close to him in aggregate of money won. The St. Leger. One Thousand Guineas and Epsom Oaks were among the great prizes that fell to horses of his own brecdiuc. The ex-American.,- V. Wootton and D. Mailer for leading honors in jockeyship was missed from English racing this year. The Hat racing season was not half over before the Irish jockey S. Donoghue had gained sucli a lead that he had no contest for lirst place. He is, beyond question, a skillful rider and, being a geuial and witty person, is extremely popular with his brother jockeys. He won none of the five classics, but was successful In many important events, among them the Great Metropolitan at Epsom, Great Northern Handicap at York, Liverpool Summer Cup and important races at Ascot, Goodwood and the various Newmarket fixtures. These included the Cambridgeshire, in which he was seen to exceptional advantage in getting Honeywood home by a head. The riding record of the year was: In order of winning mounts. Mts. Lost. Won. Maiden Erlegh, Polycrates, Honeywood and the crack two-year-olds Poinmcrn and Polygram were chiefly instrumental iu sending him into his preeminence in his fourth year iu the stud. Next to him in money won was St. Simons son William the Third, with Trois Temps, Nassau, Birlingham, Roscland, Williams Pride and Orangeman as his best money winners, not a few good judges holding Roscland to lie at least the equal of any two-year-old out in the years racing. Suudrldge is third and had two brilliant two-year-old fillies out in Lady Josephine and Silver Tag, while such older horses as Sun Yat, Sunny Lake and Clairvoyante rendered him effective service in money won. Spearmint finished fourth, with Tlie Curragh and First Spear his big money winners, and the dead sire, Desmond, owes his fifth place to the 8,175 won by his son. Hapsburg.
