Weather conditions at Palmetto Park , this afternoon showed a vast improvement over those of the past few days. Summerlike weather prevailed and a large crowd journeyed to the course. Several Taces produced close and exciting finishes, with the winner getting the decision only after a hard stretch drive. The public were all at sea, llolton, well handled by Smyth, being the only favorite to score. He beat Kinmundy a nose, with Font an easy third. Northerner, in the opening dash, had little trouble in disposing of his opposition. He received some little support towards the close of speculation. Wolfs Baths, accounted for the second race in an easy manner over Batwa and Francis. The running of the third race resulted in a close finish wheu River King got up in time to dispose of Kopje and Harlequin. Page White, touted as a "good thing," was practically left at the iwst and finished a good fourth after closing an immense gap. J. AV. Hedrick won with Fifty Five, which lie secured from Mrs. J. L. Bryan recently. Jockey Rufus Shilling, who had the mount on Supreme in the fifth race, suffered a broken collarbone when Supreme fell. The horse got caught In a jam before they had gone a sixteenth. Jake Byer has arranged to leave for Aiken. S. C, on Monday next with the horses be is handling for P. S. P. Randolph. They will be rested until the early meetings m Maryland. E. Rathman has severed his connections with J. W. Hedrick and has arranged, to leave for Maryland next week. His plans are to open a public training stable near Pimlico. W. P. Bunch, reports that his son Preston Is back from France. He arrived in Washington Christmas evening. His plans call for a visit to Cuba in tho latter part of January and a return to France in March. Young Bnrch joined the ambulance corps. 4.1-France and is here on a three-months leave of absence. Before . leaving he presented his ambulance to the Red Cross society of that country. The Sauford horses are doing well at the Sanford farm near Paris and there are some splendid prospects among them.
