Lady de Bathe Lily Langtry intends bestowing her patronage to National Hunt sport this winter, and is already having Kanran and Sunny Kve, schooled for hurdle racing. Mr. J. Baylis has acquired possession of Cuthbert, the Lincolnshire Handicap winner, and Verney, the winner of the Cesarcwitch, and; these horses have already joined J. Rogers team at Chilton to be put to hurdle racing. Frank Wootton, the ex-jockey and present trainer, who has recently tnken over the Treadweli House. Epsom, stable, became of age December 14, nnd to celebrate his twenty-first birthday, gave a dinner to a few of his friends. There appears to be a likehood. of flat racing being resumed at Xewbury early In the new year. Several meetings had to be cancelled there this vear because the government took possession of the track as a camp for prisoners of war. Bine Stem, the winner of the Timberham Hurdle nt Gatwick on Friday, December 11. is an American-bred four-year-old son of Ormondale out of Golden Grain. He- has been the propertv of Mr. Barnard ever since he was a yearling, iiis owner has displayed exemplary patience with him, and he was not raced on the Hat as a two and three-year-old. Fewer jockeys than usual have been given riding retainers for next season, not more than a half dozen of our leading riders have had engagements made for them. Our representative at Manchester. A curious muddle at the Birmingham December meeting resulted in connection with a Maiden Hurdle Race, of which there were in etTect three winners. First Fll dEcosse was disqualified for carrving wrong weight and the race awarded to Yellow Chat, whose ostensible owner informed the stewards that .the partnership in the horse had not been registered, with the result that disqualification again followed, and Mark Minor, originally third, became the winner.
