THE RACING OF CHARLESTONIAN IN THE COURSE OF THE l LAST TWO YEARS Quite a good race horse has Charlestoiiian appeared at times in his two years of racing and quite dis ¬ tinctly the reverse at other times Whether his variations in form have been due to some infirmity of tern re or bodily make up or to faulty training methods is a problem Last year lie was easily beaten in the Palmetto Derby by such a commoner as Ivan Gardner Yet it was not a great while afterwards that he w found defeating such threeyearolds as Koauirr Gainer and Thornhill which in the way of a contrast was lineWhen about all that could be imagined in that line When a twoyearold Charlfstonlau was started in nine races of which he won two and was placed In four more Ills beginning in racing was deferred until August li5 when he was started in a five ami a half furlongs race for a purse at Saratoga and finished last to Little Nephew Hoamer Surprising and four ethers tin race lieing run in lM f August LU In another race at the same track and distance he fin ¬ ished thirteenth in a field of fifteen starters Hrumley winning with Harvest Queen se oud and Miss Cava raugh third in 3 OS if August I he was unplaced to Little Nephew rudaimted and Trumps in the San loid Memorial Slakes at threequarters of a mile run over a slow track in 1141 That was his last race of that year in which he was unplaced lie was not started again until November 4 at the Pimlico fall meeting when at five and a half furlongs lie defeated fifteen opixtuents in a race for maiden twoyear fds and won by two lengths in 108 with Thornhiil second and Prince Chilton third It must have be coiie well known that he had Improved since Ills unpromising Saratoga campaign for he was at slightly less than 4 to 1 in this big band of starters November 7 in a sprint for all ages at the same distance lie ran third to Flittergold and Besom and was only beaten a length in the track record time of J0i This was a good race and the old warrior Sir John Johnson was among the six behind him Four days later he did better still when in a handicap for twoyearolds at threequarters of a mile he won in 114 and de ¬ feated Stromboli Fndaunted Brave Cunarder Martian Zodiac Executor and Lyric Muse lie carried 11 1oimds to 1 4 on Stromboli and won by a nose at the end of a drive in which he and tho Belmont crack raced head and head throughout the length of the homestretch At Charleston December Brigs Brother nnd Brave Cuuaider defeated 11m at live and a half furlongs in a race for which he was a 4 to favorite nuii on December 1 the threeyearold Tarts won from him by a head at threequarters of a mile in 114 HMVC Cunarder finishing third It was no discredit 1o him to be beaten by such a fast filly as Tarts On the lasr day of the month the colt Deposit carrying lOJ pounds boat him by a half length at threequarters of a mile in 115 over a muddy track He carried US pounds Ivan Gardner with 111 up was third Boy Hill Brave Cunarder and Gordon running unplaced If any deduction could be made from this race if was that Charlestoiiian must inevitably defeat Ivan Gardner in the Palmetto Derby the race all the best twoyearolds at Charleston wen pointing for forIlls Ills first race UK a threeyearold was in the Spartanburg Handicap at threequarters run February 11 ov r a good track Old Hen won this In 11 Ji with the 4 to i favorite Surprising second and Korfhage bird His turn to win canie Ferhuary 20 when in the Derby Preliminary Handicap at a mile he defeated Deposit Indolence Ivan Gardner Polly II and Old Hen in 145 on a sloppy track and gave weight to all in the race except Old Hen Next Old Ben gave him a pound and a lengths beating at i mile nml a six ¬ teenth in Tills was seesawing with a vengeance Old Hen having finished last in the Derby Prelim ¬ inary The Derby was run February 2S and carrying 11 pounds to his HIT Ivan Gardner won with Indo ¬ lence second Charleslonian was third and a to 10 favorite the mile nnd a quarter of the race being covered In 210 over a muddy track trackFrom From Charleston he was taken north and making his first start in the Withers Stakes at Helmont Park May D was naturally a 40 to 1 outsider since at equal weights he was meeting Old Rosebud Gainer Uoamer nnd Superintendent Yet he won This was the race for which Old Itosehud was favorite at 1 to T and fell lame while in the lead and finished last It was a moral certainty that he would have won but for iie accident As it was CharlesfoiUan euniK through the s twitch so fast and so resolutelv that he won from Gainer by a few inches in IrJSHf with Hoamer a bad third eight length away This was a race of uudcniiihlc merit and when in the Larehmout Stakes June 4 he took up 127 ixiunds to tO on Gainer and defeated the latter again with Figinny 114 third and TltornhJJl EiulyKose ami IJJnck Broom unplaced il began to appear that Charlestonian wax a lUUfh iiliprqyed horse since getting away from Charleston This race was at a mile and nil eighth over a sloppy track and was run In 1ii However when it came to the running of the Belumut Stakes oi June 20 with only three starting Gainer beat him a half length for second money while Luke Meluke won the race away on nv himself The three races seemed to dem ¬ onstrate Unit at that time Saltier and Charlestoiiian were pretty close together In racing form After that he was lieaten in five more races and did not win again until at the Belmimt Park fall meeting There meetingThere on September 11 at a mile with pounds up he ran the distance in 1 s and easily defeated Hedge 11C pounds and Thornhll 110 September 1 when carrying 108 pounds he defeated Meeting House 12 pounds Yankee Xotious lii Hester Pryniie 112 Flittergold 10S Spring Hoard 114 fncle Mini OH Buskin 12 and Lily Orme 00 ami running the threequarters of the race in 112 won from Meeting House by two lengths This was a capital performance His last race of the year was a handicap at seveneighths of a mile in which the starters weights and order of finish were Flittergold lOl pounds Working Lad 100 Charleslonian Hr and Buskin 115 Flittergold won by a head in 121 while
