FLASH OF STEELS AUSTRALIAN VICTORY Concerning an Important race run at Canllield Australia February 20 Vigilant said in London Sportsman of February 22 With reference to a paragraph which appeared in Saturdays issue stating that the two Irishbred horses Land of Song and Flash of Steel would run on the same afternoon for the valuable Caullield Futurity Stakes of 2r OO sovereigns I yesterday received a wire from Lionel Robinson that Flash of Steel won the race hy a neck starting at 5 to 4 against Owned in partnership by Messrs Robinson and Clark Flesh of Steel was font to Australia last summer after having run here on three occasions without success in races won by Roseland Friar Marcus and Golden Era In all throe events Flash of Steel which was then known as Orbost showed speed aud for Golden Eras race the Kennet Plate at Xewhury June he finished third of fifteen He was bred by R Croker in 1012 and is by Orby sire of such siMdy animals as Diadumenos Flying Orb The Boss and Gleneairn out of Blakestown by Les teriin out of Stella by Xecromaneer Being stiil a maiden he claimed all the allowances in the Caul Held Futurity and was In receipt of no less than fortytwo pounds from Laud of Song which is a fouryearold and therefore Flash of Steels senior by a year The winner is nevertheless entitled to considerable credit for being foaled in 1012 he is only now a young threeyearold according to our reckoning and was at a big disadvantage with the Australianbred horses of his own age Out there the year begins on August 1 and horses foaled in the autumn of 1011 therefore nearly six months before Flash of Steel are now still only three yearolds
