KENTUCKY DERBY NOT FAR AWAY NOW Louisville Ky April 10 It is only three weeks from the coming Saturday tu the fortyfirst re ¬ newal of the Kentucky Derby the greatest of all such races decided in America both iu resiiect to age and general interest interestThe The Derby this season will be run at Churchill Downs on Saturday May 8 the opening day of the twelveday spring meeting of the New Louisville rVjckey Club which will come to a close on Fri ¬ day May 21 The field for this givat race bids fair to over ¬ shadow any ever before engaged in it In point of class the entries for the Kentucky Derby this season will compare favorably with those of any threeyearold stake ever run in America There are real champions among the eligibles They represent the stables of turfmen of prominence throughout the country In other seasons usually a few of the eligibles appeared to outclass the others engaged and in the early spring the wise ones generally have Ijecn eager to give their opinion as to the probable winner of the race If such folks have an opinion of the probable out ¬ come this season they have refrained from express ¬ ing it which gees to show how oiicn the race is regarded regardedThe The season of 114 developed many brilliant twoyearolds suid all of these are engaged in tho i Kentucky Derby including the champion lilly of last year It is easily to lie seen as a consequence the reason no one has been liold enough as yet to come out and predict the winner of the event as has been the case in other years from the days of Arlstides down to Old Rosebuds time timeBefore Before he sold Iron Duke and The Finn to H C Hallfiibeek recently J U Madden thought highly of his chances of repeating his triumph iii the Kentucky Derby of ISOS when he won the event with his great colt Plaudit Besides those named his eligibles this spring embraced Sani McMeekin Bill Dudley and Charter Maid the latter also being eligible tor tho Kentucky Oaks Be ¬ fore his sale Iron Duke was regarded as his cer ¬ tain standard bearer This slashing chestnut colt only ran once last season and won like si crack During 1014 Mr Madden was offered 20000 for this colt and when the youngster was in quaran ¬ tine in Ohio last fall with the rest of his eastern racing string it was no secret that Mr Madden told many of his friends that the government could hold the rest of the horses as long as they wished in Ohio if the authorities would only let him ship Iron Duke to Hamburg Place This goes to show how highly he regarded his unbeaten youngster at that time nnd from rill reports no colt entered in tho Kentucky Derby this season has wintered in grander condition than this colt Having won a Kentucky Derby Mr Madden knows just what it takes to capture such u race He also has to his credit the honor of being the breeder of Old Kosebud which has the distinction of having won the fastest Derby on record since the Churchill Downs event bus been run at one mile and a quarter Iron Duke is a son of the Futurity winner Ogden the sire of many good stake winners and is out of Saratoga Belle by Henry of Navsirre He Is a brother to Fayette and his dam is a sister to Sallie of Navarre the dam of the great Salvidere It is one of the most successful lines of the famous Magnolia family the only one that has yet produced an American bred winner of the Epsom Derby that performer lio ing the mighty Iroqnois which silso woi the St Leger of his year yearInless Inless Lindcnthal shows the form as a threc yearold as trainer J F Schorr expected him to last season when he lirst sent the sou of Star Shoot to the i ost at Lexington it is safe to say that the Kentucky Derbv starter from the Schorr stable will be that sturdy colt Ed Crump which last season on several occasions exhibited marked indications of being a stayer The Memphis turf ¬ man has Geo Koisch Star Shooter and Goldcnst Boy also engaged in the big race but no one of this trio was anything near in racing ability last season to Ed Crump The closest J W Schorr ever came to winning a Kentucky Derby was in lSKS when he furnished the favorite in Leiber Karl and Plaudit beat that colt in the rich stake as well as in the Clark Stakes a few days later at the same meeting Mr Schorr had no starter in the Derbv last season lint ho sent Leochares to the post in the classic of 1914 While leaving Douglas Park on the morning the Derby of 114 was run trainer Schorr remarked to T P Hayes who wsis sending his colt Donerail over to Churchill Downs for the race Well Hayes we sire two fools in starting in the Derby We surely have no chance and one of us will run last and the other next to last Striking indeed was the vic ¬ tory of Donerail over Ten Point and Gows11 that afternoon but Schorr wsis right about Leochares as thsit gelding ran absolutely last lastDonerail Donerail is the rankest outsider that ever won the Kentucky Derbv His odds in the race were over 11 to 1 which showed that the public shared with trainer Schorr his opinion of the Hayes representative in the race that afternoon Tho sou of McGee however ran an unexpectedly good race not unlike that of Sir Bevys in tho Epsom Derby of 1S7SI when that 100 to 1 shot heat out Psilnibearer Visconti Cadogan Kayon dOr and the winner of the L000 Guineas Charibert In the St Leger Rayon dOr proved the superior to Sir Bovys and was later on brought to this coun ¬ try by the Pennsylvania turfman W L Scott and in the stud got scores of stsike winners iiir eluding the mighty Tenny the Futurity winner Chaos and Banquet winner of HS5o5 in stakes and purses pursesSccretsiry Sccretsiry II O Applegatc will have tho Churchill Downs program Imok ready for distribution as early as possible ami at the latest it will bo in the hands of horsemen during the first week of the coming Lexington meeting The arrsty of purses to be hung up by the New Louisville Jockey Club this spring is unusually liberal and will furnish an attractive setting to the rich stakes to be rim during the twelve days of racing these embracing in addition to the Derby with its 10000 in added money such fixtures as the Clark Handicap the Kentucky Oaks and the Frank Frhr Bashford Manor Debutante and Juven ¬ ile Stakes StakesM M J Winn manager of the Downs course is now at homo and is personally looking after the extensive improvements which sire being rushed to completion sit the big plant While in New York recently he saw many prominent eastern turf ¬ men and every one of them assured him that they would be in Louisville this spring for tho run ¬ ning of the Kentucky Derby A number of them in fact have engsiged boxes for Derby Day and the remainder of the Churchill Downs meeting It will surely lx a remarkable twelve dsiys of rac ¬ ing at this track this spring with such a feature to draw the public sis a Derbv which promises to overshadow all races for threeyearolds run In recent years in this country The Kentucky Derby with jts wealth of siiitiment is the strongest drawing card of any race now run in Ibis country and will be particularly attractive this season on account of the wonderful array of entries made for it With the grounds now ar ¬ ranged to accommodate more people than ever bo fore and the usual free field prevailing on that day it is safe to say that the big nice on May S next will be witnessed bv the greatest crowd that ever witnessed si contest between horses in this part of America
