AUSTRALIAN TRAINING METHODS METHODSIn In England as in Australia training methods have changed considerably during the past twenty live or thirty years For instance a two miles gallop for a race at that distance is something almost unheard of in Australia nowadays a solid mile and three furlongs on the training track being cuiisidcnil by many trainers quite far enough for any horse in its preparation for a Melbourne or Sydney Cup It is contended that oldtime methods look all the dash out of most horses and that it 5 possible to have them as right in the wind and better in other respects without taxing them so liiavily in private In England threeyearolds in particular are treated to much lighter preparations than in the past and in a recent edition of the Sporting Life it was mentioned that this was due to the fact that in addition to having deteriorated in size they did not soem to possess the iron con ¬ stitutions of their ancestors However it would be pivly safe o bet that as racing machines they are aresnpfilir snpfilir t their ancestors just as In Austral miirhdcplorcd bad horses continue to run various distances in times that would have hien regarded u almost impossible twentylive years ago Svduev Ufftree
