THE LATE 31 C VYNER AND HIS HORSES R f Yyner the wellknown Yorkshire sports inan and racehorse owner who won the Grand Prize of Paris with Minting and the Jit Lexer with The Lniiihkin died at his residence in Lou 1 March 19 after ti short illness at the axe of 7 years yearsThere There was no better allround sportsman in England than Mr It C Vyner Educated at Eton he was for some time in tlie Grenadier Guards Imt sold out after his marriage It is not gcucr ally known that this scion of one of the most sporting families in Yorkshire commenced rac ¬ ing in lifii under the assumed name of Mr Spring when he had a few horses in the Ash gill stable and sevenil trained by Sanderson at Hamblcton House Thirsk The Lambkin and luventus were left him hv his brother the late Sir Clare Vyner The first horse raced by Mr It C Vyner as Mr Spring was Claret Grove by Claret from The Fox which as a fouryear old was a singularly unfortunate horse as after winning his lirsl race the Ncwby IMate of 250 at Kipon in 1S71 he tool part in ten more journeys without gaining brackets bracketsAfter After that period Mr Vyner always had a few horses in training but did not win an important race until Organist took the Chester Cup in 1S74 Tills crack he purchased from Mr Gleadowe after he had won the Iainbton Llate at Durham about a month previously With Organist he also won the Sold Vase at Ascot beating the French horse Montargis which the year previous had taken the Cambridgeshire for Henry Jennings stable Or ¬ ganist iKKit the latter by a head and as Lilian and Miss Tolo lioth capital mares were behind the pair the i erformaiice of the musician was a good one Organist was bred by James Ridley brotherinlaw to John Itobert William and George Osbornt at Bcllcrby Tom Chaloner re ¬ sided at Middleham in those days when Tom Winter of Caller On celebrity was also in form with some horses owned by Billy Nichol and several others in his stable stableAfter After the suceyss of Organist Mr Vyner always had a few horses in training but never a really good winner nor any that probably paid their expenses until 1SS ° when he owned the three yearold lilly Fragra by Camballo from Rambla which won him her lirst three races in succession Commencing at Newcastle Spring she toylc the Meldon Handicap and went to Pontefract where she won the Carlcton Handicap She next took the llambleton 1late at Thirst Spring Mr ynor also owned Tarrangoneso a brother to Fragra and ran him in many races as a two yearold without any good result With Sarra i twoyearold by Camlrallo Mr Vyner took the Savil Park Stakes also in 18S5 and the Min ¬ irack Stakes with Juventiie During the follow ¬ ing season however Mr Vyner dropped into almost proverbial good luck for not only did the hgill stable win him some good races but The Lamb ¬ kin took for him the St Leger Gloriosa the two yearold by Camballo from Gloria won him six prizes four of these being landed in succession namely the Northern Juvenile Plate at Lincoln Spring the Prince of Wales Stakes at Poute fract and the Victoria Plate at the same meeting She also took tin Little John Plate at Notting ¬ ham Spring the iBishop Burton Stakes at Bevcrlcy and the Wright Stakes at Richmond With the twoyearold Alb he won four races This lilly was a daughter of Speculum from Silver Band She Avon the Zetland Plate at Catterick the Fitz william Stakes at Doncaster Spring the Londes borough Stakes at Pontefract and cut down eleven opponents for the Eglinton Nursery it the Man ¬ chester Noveml er meeting It will thus be seen That considering the small band of horses Mr Vynter had in training he must be put down as having had a successful season with the lot in work at Ashgill AshgillThe The LambKin ran only twice as a twoyearold and the lirst time of asking he won the Rons Plate at Doneaster in a canter from Richelieu when giving weight to that colt There were eight others be ¬ hind the pair of middling class but the colt won so easily and was so goodlooking that he made many frends lie ran once again as a twoyearold for the Chesterlleld Nursery at Derby but was unplaced to Perdita II to which he was trying to give 0 pounds and there were twentytwo runners lie wintered well and ran for the City and Suburban when he was beaten with only 84 ixmnds on his back but he went down with a lot of good horses in that race as Quicklime for once at his best and lightly handicapped won easily At Sandown The Lamb ¬ kin had however an easier task to beat Acrostic for the Esher Stakes when giving that horse two iounds Still the company with which he raced was moderate and although he took the Summer Cup over three miles from his only opponent My Lud easily there were many people who did not consider him good enough to win the St Leger In fact Scot free had by far the largest following and Superba with Xir Reuben and Harvester wen better favor ¬ ites than the Heath House champion The Lamb ¬ kin after a stoutly contested finish with Saudiway landed the coveted prize for ii good and popular sportsman Prior to this victory he had run for the Grand Prize of Paris but Little Duck beat him easily easilyMr Mr Vyner was the son of the late Captain Henry Vyner of Gantby Lincolnshire and Newby Hall ItiM ii His mother was a daughter of the lirst Karl ile Gray In bis younger days Mr Vyaer was an ardent patron of coursing His brother won the Two Thousand Guineas with the famous horse Cam ¬ ballo the year being 1ST ami while Mr It C probably lost a Derby through tin nonentry of Organist it was considered so at the time Cam hallo met with a mishap after his Guinwis victory and xmitl not reproduce his best form at Epsom Mention may here be made of the heroism shown by the brothers Vyner on the occasion of that nevcr tobeforpotteJi York and Ainstay hunting accident which gave great grief to them and many others Then some years later came more family trouble in the death of Camhallos owner The cutting short of u career which happened to one might at an earlier date have been the lot of both Had they not been experienced swimmers they might have shared the same fate as others in their faial acci ¬ dent at Newby in 1SK when in the fastrunning and swollen Urc the ferry boat turned over ami riders arid horses of the York and Ainsty limit including Sir Charles Slingsby the master were pre ¬ cipitated into the river Indescribably sad was the scene too sad for contemplation by the survivors veil now In all tlieie were eleven horses and thirteen men including the two in charge of the boat and in a few minutes six of that crew in ¬ cluding Sir Charles Sliiigvby the master wore dead Camhallos owner anil Mr Robert escaped but the lifesaving deeds of these two brothers were heroic in the extreme It was Mr Henry Vvner lirst en that fatal upturned boat who pulled the yetliving Sir George Wombwell of alaclava fame on to the craft it was Mr Robert Vyner who plunged ii from the bank and fared an other popular and nlmost exhausted sportsman in Mr E Llyod but Sir Charles Slingsby the master when swimming for the l ank was seized with cnuMi and losit lositMinor Minor successes in comparison with that of Mint ¬ ing may lw passed over Minting had the misfor ¬ tune to be of classic age in the same year as the mighty Ormonde and in the Guinea the Duke of Westminsters coir beat Mr Vyners son of Lord Lym by two lengths It was recognized that Mint ¬ ing stood no chance of reversing the placings in tio Derby and Mr Vyner conseipientlv decided to keep his colt for the Grand Prize of Purls F Archer ode the colt and was looking round on passing the viiiuing iist the prize being worth nearly SoOOO to he owner of tho violet livery The following year Minting won the Jubilee Cup at Ascot with John Oshorne up under i4 pounds Then followed the great battle between Ormonde and Minting in the Ilardvicko Stakes at Ascot They met at level weights IM pounds and Ormonde gained the ver ¬ dict by a neck after a most terrific struggle BOM dlgo being three lengths iKlind the second Minting as a twoyearold made his debut bv winning the Sea ton Delaval Stakes at Newmarket by six lengths the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood the Cliim liiigna the Triennial at Newmarket nd the Middle Istrk Plate were added n due sucicsslon and at the end f the season be had an unbeaten record thoagh ISraw Lass only missed the latter by a neck As a five yearold Minting won the Great Jubilee Handi ¬ cap at Kempton Park with 140 pounds on his back md tool tio Hardwicko Stakes under K5S pounds two wonderful performances performancesThy Thy year 1SR was altogether n snod one for Mr Vvner for in addition to Mintings French vctery Stone Clink won for him the Nortimm liorland Plate and lie Vsarewilch while many other good races were won During the following season Mr Vypor owned such cracks as Crow IM rry Gautby Fallow Chat Rivirro and Glcria ton and Stone Clink earned more stakes Gloria tion won the Cambridgeshire and his victory came about in a peculiar way A young sportsman fitntied thi colt and backed him The owner cniKdered that GIrriatiin steed i hance and was M the jK nt of scratching th horse when learn iT from the young gentlemans father that his iii lind taken a bet the two were Md friends Mr Vvner decided that bis colt should take his liiime nt Newmarket How be NewbyMr Mr Vyner purchased Hosebery at a knockout price when that horse came under the hammer at Tattersalls and the horse proved a tremendous bargain He sired many winners of note includ ¬ ing Ixidy
