DERBY CANDIDATES CLOSELY WATCHED Preparation of Eligibles for Great Churchill Downs Race Followed with Keen Interest Louisville Ky April 22 As the time approaches for the Kentucky Derby every move made by the various candidates for it iu training both at tile local tracks and elsewhere throughout the country is keenly noted by the lovers of racing more so than ever before because of the extraordinarily high class of the threeyearolds that will go to the post for the classic at Churchill Downs May 8 8All All the eligible to the big stake that are in training here aro fulfilling every requirement of their trainers and so far not a single one of the number which embrace the entries of Tames Butler J E Madden and J W Schorr lias shown the least indication of going wrong Such brilliant threeyearolds as the unbeaten Last Coin Pebbles Kilkenny Boy Ed Crump and Sam McMcekin arc doing all their trainers ask of them and are daily een on the track in active preparation for the big race raceTlie Tlie arrival of II P Whitneys great stable Is expected at any time at the Downs including three Kentucky Derby eligibles in the unbeaten filly Regret Prince Henry and Spun Glass It is now believed that Regret will surely start in the Derby und It Is also considered likely that Prince Henry may go to this past with his great stable mate The latter is a half brother to tlui mighty Salvideruj and his dairi Sallic of Navarre cost Mr Whitney 10000 for the stud at public sale saleAnother Another candidate which lias many admirers in the Derby and which is expected soon at the Downs is Capt B B Cassatts noted gelding Garbage which won nearly 9000 in stakes and purses last season He Is in the lianas of a skillful trainer and while little has been heard of his recent work it is regarded as a certainty that he will be fit to go to the post for the big race raceFor For the first time in a number of years George T Long has no Derby candidate in training lie has an entry this season iu Freeman a half brother to the great Free Lance by a Kentucky Derby winner Sir Huon but trainer Pete Coyne is making no effort to tit hinv for this engagement Freeman was injured slightly as a yearling in n collision with Hurran while working on the track It has taken him all this time to get over that shaking tip though he was started twice as a twoyearold That accident may prevent him from ever being a really great horse but be is likely to win some races this reason As a yearling before his ac ¬ cident lie was regarded as one of the best young ¬ sters ever raised at Basbford Manor farm Trainer Coyne will not take Ralph up until nest fall on the ndvico of Dr Shoppard That veterinarian advised that Ralph remain out of training at least one full year and in this way he lias hopes that the great oolts artery will never trouble him afterwards Ralph was one of the winter fav ¬ orites for the Kentucky Derby of 1914 and Mr Long at one time refused an offer of 20000 for liim The ailment with which he is afflicted is rare in horses and in fact Dr Sheppard says he has only beard of five or six such cases in all his ex ¬ perience as a veterinarian The ailment afflicted Ralph in one of his hips and at times when attacked lie hud no use of that leg All lovers of good horses hope for Ralphs recovery and return to the track as he was a brilliant twoyearold and 11 liis Derby training last year at times showed dashes of brilliant speed us was ever exhibited by any threeyearold trained on the Churchill Downs track trackBelloc Belloc winner of the Clark handicap last season worked a mile Wednesday in 149 tf and pulled up without showing any signs of soreness much to the gratification of his owner James MacManus Bod ¬ ily this noted fouryearold is In splendid condi ¬ tion and he is sure to bring some returns Into his1 stable before this season Is far advanced though in entering him in the bh handicaps his owner merely did it as a compliment to the tracks as be has no Idea this spring of asking the son of Oddfellow so exacting a task as racing with the cracks that will go to tho post in an event like the Clark Handicap He will race him when lie gets In proper condition In overnight purse races in which he willnot have to carry too much weight on his troublesome legs legsBodge Bodge worki4 ttgalu WeOneMJay furious pulling up in 119 and continues to train as well as any horse here lie will bo ready earlier than most people predicted several weeks ago In fact he Is right now not far away from a race With such horses as Old Rosebud Ralph Free Lance and Great Britain out of training this spring Hodge looms up as a likely contestant for honors iu tho fouryearold division The noted filly Bronewing is also going along in her work this season like a real turf queen So far Bhc has shown no sign of any soreness in training and moreover this spring she seems to possess a grunt turn of speed She will be hard to beat iu any race over a mile whenever her trainer Dan Leliiin pronounces her ready to race Of course both Hodge and Bronze wing have Luke McLuke In their way provided IIP stands hard training but like so many other stars of the older division lie is on the suspicious list This might fouryearold has never boon a real perfectly sound horse since lie was a yearling and his present trouble may not be serious enough to keep him from the post this spring in his impor ¬ tant engagements Trainer Schorr is endeavoring to IltndicapHis get Luke McLuke ready for the Clark Iltndicap His f has ii iiattempt attempt was with Froglogs which was beaten in inthe the race run iu the mud in Buckthorn BuckthornHorsemen Horsemen at the Downs are much impressed with till English bred twoyearolds in Jefferson Living ¬ stons stable and especially with tho bay colt by the unbeaten Colin out of Ormula a daughter of the great Ormc This youngster has been named Colonel Winn out of compliment to the manager of the Churchill D wns course as well as other race tracks He is a good looking youngster of high racing type and possesses an abundance of size as well as substance He bas a neat bony bend and a neck well set into good shoulders showing a deepness through the heart His back indicates he will be a weight carrier and the cut of his hind legs indicates he will possess all necessary speed He has sound legs and good feet and in fact is nearly perfect all over lie looks like a colt of which almost anything can be expected and it would be no surprise If in picking him up in England for Mr Livingston trainer Chinn drew one of the prizes of tho racing season of 1915 1915Jockey Jockey T Koerner lias gone to Lexington to licgin riding in Kentucky again and is with his old employer T C McDowell for whom lie won many brilliant races a few years ago on that great marc Kings Daughter and the noted colt The Manager Keorner thinks that before the season in Kentucky is far along he will be able to ride as light as 105 pounds If bo lecps in good riding condition be will have a mount in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby on one of the McDowell entries in that event which embrace the gelding Liberator and the Watercress colt Manager Waite Koerner like Roscoc Goose is a Louisville lad and has always had a strong following among turfmen in this city Riding talent will be anything but scarce for the coming meeting at Churchill Downs
