PEBBLES IN A GOOD WORKOUT Impression Prevails That He Will bo Depended Upon to Win Derby for James Butler Louisville Ky April 29 In his most recent Herbv trial at Churchill Downs James Butlers great colt 1ebbles showed that trainer 11 0 Jtenson is gradually getting the son of Hen Brush up to a workout over the full Derby course one milo and a quarter All horsemen who have noted Iebbles work for the coming big race unhesitat ¬ ingly say that he will surely lie Itt on Saturday May S when the great event is to he rim Yester ¬ day Pebhles was paced by Doublet and Kilkenny Hoy anil ran the first part of the trial with the speed of the fastest of sprinters He went the first eighth in 12V the quarter in iTJf three furlongs in 3 the half in Hi if Jive furlongs in f six furlongs in 1 12 seven furlongs in j l2i the mile in 140 the mile and an eighth in 155 tinrt the mile nmln quarter in 210 pulled up Tainer Benson did not intend that Iebbles should work the tirst haf better than 49 hut his pilot lost his head when Doublet and Kil ¬ kenny Boy ranged alongside the brown colt and lie let out a wrap or two to retain his lead Peb ¬ bles came out of the work in grand sliane and to nil appearances It will do him si world of good in his preparation to go the Derby route His iitxt work will probably l e the full Derby dis ¬ tance and a good many good judges think that with the blinkers on and properly paced through out that workout he will show a Derby trial Perhaps never equalled over the track at the Downs It Is now believed that If fast track conditons prevail on Derhv dav Pebbles will be the sole reliance of Air Butlers great stable in tlic Derhv race Should the course he muddy on that dnte It 1 more than likely that Kilkenny Ioy will also start in the Butler colors but it I the Impression now that trainer Benson thinks Ichhlbs capable of winning the Kentucky Derby without the aid of any of his great stable com ¬ panions if the race is run over a fast track trackTrainer Trainer Benson wnt Mr Butlers Kentucky Oak candidate Comely a mile in 147 and the daughter of Disguise II did not blow to any ex ¬ tent in her workout She was paced In the lliellt M euitt to justify the prediction that from t n to twelve starters will go to the post in the Kentucky Derby this spring in spite of the prestige of such eastern cracks as Pebbles Trojan Sharp ¬ shooter and Kegrct all of which are sure to go to the post postTurfmen Turfmen coming hack from Lexington to the Downs speak in great praise of the Englishbred colt Royal II which has Ijeen racing in great form at that course It is understood that trainer If R Brandt will ship the Livingston horses to tlio Downs not latcrJUrah tho ciiming jatunlax or Sunday which will gie him nearly a week to work over the track where the great race will he run Royal II wintered at the Downs and received his first training there this spring Horsemen generally believe that Royal II will put up a superb performance in the Derby as they do not question that he Is a real oldfashioned stavcr It remains to lie seen however how he will perform when it cnmes to chasing such speed marvels as Pebbles anil Hegret Ie may he the greatest stayer and still not he alilo fo heat such horse over the mile and a quarter course Peb ¬ bles for instance is sure not to wat or any of his competitors in the coming Derby and unless Regret can keep him busy he may repeat Old Rosebuds performance of last season and lead from the rise of the barrier to the finishing line lineISoamcr ISoamcr which will make his first start in Kcn tncjv at the Down this spring was breezed hy trainer ioldslmrough a half mile with ease in 47 From some of tho work shown at present at this course the impression might Ixi gained that the Churchill Downs track is extra fast It is in good condition for fast work but nothing like it has been at frequent times In the past as it Is decidely cuppy in places A good shower is what it needs at present even though It has been sprinkled every day since it dried out nfter the last rain It is the general opinion Mint it will l e faster than ever this spring and that the winner of the Kentucky Derby will have to heat Old Rorehuds time in that event 20 which is the track record at tlie Downs for the Derby distance one mile and a quarter quarterTrainer Trainer Pete Coyne is going along nicely now with George J Longs twoyearold division The owner of Bashford Manor Farm has a likely hunch of youngsters this season and liefore the year is over it is thought he will show another Kalnli and a Scmprite in this collection His best colts are supitoscd to he Jerry Rochester and Jasper the latter being named for Edward Jasper racing secretary for the Kentucky tracks and at Kin pi rts City Laurel and Juarez The fillies best liked In the Long string are Jess and Cahiria both of which are eligible to the Debiitunte Stakes to be run at the Downs on Monday Mny 10 The throe colts tirst named are all engaged in the Bashford Manor Stakes which will lie run this season at the Downs on Wednesday May 12 12Prince Prince Hermis is training unusually well for Lew Clarion this spring and will he ready to begin racing as soon as the Downs mopting opens He has never lieen n good work horse so this season Marlon has generally when setting him down let some other performer range alongside of him when he gets in his stride lie has spread out greatly since last season and carries more flesh this spring than ever liefore He will undoubtedly win his share of races this season as a fiveyear old Veterinarians who have thoroughly examined M B Cmbers speedy gelding Little Nephew ex ¬ press the opinion that he will be able to race during the coming spring meeting at the Downs It turns out that he did not spread his foot as was reported and that his recent injury is only a severe quarter crack This has rapidly yielded to treatment and the son of Uncle will begin taking his work again In a few days Up to the time of this happening Little Nephews training lias been most satisfactory this spring and lie apparently has all his oldtime speed It may he that he will yet make up to his owner the disappointment he experienced with the fast gelding as a three yearold Irist season
