DORTCH GIVEN A CAPITAL DERBY TRIAL egret and Spun jGlass in HalfSpeed WorkOuts Make Good Impression ImpressionLouisville Louisville Ky May 4 The latest work of the candidates for the Kentucky Derby shows the fastest performance at this course w far to the credit of ihe maiden Bortcb which will get in the rich stake as light as 110 pounds This Tennesseebred colt was worked In the afternoon and covered the full Derby route of one mile and a quarter in 207 He covered the first eighth in 12 the quarter In 24 the threeeighths in r the half in 48 the fiveeighths In 102 tho three quarters in 113 the seveneighths In l20Vf the mile in 139 and the mle and an eighth In 1 The work was extra well done by this son of Ivan the Terrible as during most of the trial lie was facing a strong wind He is un ¬ doubtedly one of the most improved threeyear olds in training and It appears now that he has anyway an outside chance in the rich stake One thing Is certain he is another sure starter starterII II P Whitneys unbeaten filly Regret has so far gone one mile and a quarter workout since her arrival at the Downs from Brookdale She covered in this work with jockey E Notter in the saddle the full Derby route in 2143f merely opening work for a final fast trial some time this week before the event is run off In this trial she cantered all the way going the first mile in 148 the mllo and an eighth in 202 and then livened up a bit the last eighth running this part of the work in 12 She acts like a mare that can run all day and is as grand a looking filly as ever trod the soil at Churchill Downs DownsHer Her stable companion Spun Glass also a Derby eligible worked the same route galloping with Notter up in 217 the first eighth in 14 the quarter in 27 the threeeighths in 41 the half in 54 the fiveeighths in 1OS the three quarters In 122 the seveneighths in 1 ° 0 the mile in 149 Jf and the mile and an eighth in 203 This daughter of the Englishbred winner Rock Sand and the groat race man1 and producer Haridspun is also a goOdlnokirig filly and it may be that even though she will not start with Regret in the Derby she may carry the Whitney colors in tho Kentucky Oaks to IKS run on the closing day of the Downs spring meeting meetingAnother Another Derby candidate that has gone one milo and a quarter since landing here from Maryland Is Uncle Bryn which was cantered the distance in 217 and will probably be worked by trainer J Walden the full Derby route again at his best in the next Jew days Undo Bryn comes on the dams side from that branch of the Mag ¬ nolia racing family to which belonged the un ¬ beaten Frencli Park and that highclass stake colt Macco His dam Aunt Belle is by Sir Dixon Aunt Anne by Blue Eyes and the next dam is Kate Duncan by Stone Plover Banquet the other Derby candidate in Waldens stable conies from the Gallonnde family his dam Festa being by Britannic she being out of Holiday by Hope ¬ ful and the next dam is the noted Minnie Me by Planet PlanetMr Mr Walden who has these two Derby candidates In charge and also eight other Marylandbred horses in training at the Downs is a son of the famous trainer of long ago Wyndham Walden Tlie latter trained and raced many great horses for the late George L Lorillard including such stars of racing as the unbeaten Sensation the mighty Duke of Magenta Balance All Ferida Splnaway Loiterer Harold Monitor Grenada St Augustine Idler Memento Idalia Reveller Triton Queens Own Aeia Louisette Albert Thackeray Sir Hugh and Lou Lanier These performers many seasons ago by their winnings in this famous trainers care put Lorillard at the head of the winning owners on the American turf At the present trainer Walden has in his string now at the Downs in Sugar King probably one of the largest twoyearolds which lias ever been housed at this track He stands right at 17 hands high and the first of last Janu ¬ ary when taken up at the close of his yearling form he girthed 73 Inches In spite of his enormous size he is a fine horse possessing much quality and bids fair to l c an early winner as since landing here the first time h was asked ta canter a quarter at a fair rate of speed ho worked under restraint In 24 He is a beautifullybred horse iKing by King James Bellamia by Henry of Navarre she being a daughter of the famous Bella Donna by Hermit and as a consequence a halfsister to the sensational Beldame BeldameJames James Rowe in addition to Regret and Spun Glass brought eight horses to the Downs from Brookdale farm Three of them are the noted older horses Harmonicon Borrow and Pandean and the other five are the twoyearolds Encleii Domi ¬ nant Brommo Thunder and Chicle This is the first time that this famous trainer has visited1 I the Downs either with a string of horses or as I a guest since 1SS2 when Hindoo was a fouryear old The stand was then on the opposite side of the track to what it is today and the vast improvement In the plant wis a revelation to Mr Rowe All tho old landmarks he remembered in the neighborhood have long since passed away and he was amazed by the growth of the city around and beyond the Downs When he last was here be stopped with Sam Bryant of Proctor Knott fame at tho Old Tavern which that noted horse ¬ man kept during his lifetime just beyond the Downs track Mr Rowe laughingly said he hoped lie would not have quite as bad luck in the first starts of his horses hero this year as lie ex ¬ perienced that season long ago as Spollo beat Runnymode for him in the Derby and Checkmate l eat Hindoo in that horses first start that spring Both of those races with good luck he should have won In fact It was lucky indeed for Apollo to l eat Riinnymede and Checkmate to lower Hin ¬ doos colors Both of these horses that spring were not beaten in any other race by any outside per ¬ former at the Downs that meeting Jockey J Nottcr who is here with trainer Rowe appears to be in fine riding condition and is sure to be one of the saddle stars at the coming meeting at the Downs DownsMax Max Hirsch brought with his Kentucky Derby candidate Norse King from Maryland only the horso Ponnyrock Norse King had a bit of a rough journey the last part of his trip here but appeared much Iictter after he had thoroughly rested Ho is a big rangylooking colt of a lot of bone and substance and to the eye has a speedylooking cut as well as the appearance of a colt that will go any distance He Is a half brother to Norman III that In England won for A Belmont the Two Thousand Guineas Hirsch is quite sweet on Norse Kings Derby chances and in fact makes no secret of his belief that the starter that heats him next Saturday will be the one opposedSteve that will beat all others in the field opposed Steve Lawler has arrived at the Downs with the Qunlcy Statics horses he bringing in eleven head namely Trojan Double Eagle Quincy Viceroy White Eyes Excelsior Customer Hanorla Past Master Glensdale and Pussy Willow lie announced that the stables starter in the Derby would be Double Kagle which will bo ridden in the event by jockey C Burlingame who has also arrived at the Downs Double Eagle ran a race to suit his trainer In the Cnraden
