PROBABLE CLARK HANDICAP STARTERS Big Field of Cracks in Sight with Roamer at the Head Frog Legs to Come Back Louisville Ky May 12 The weights as ad ¬ justed by handicapper E W Muginn for the Clark Handicap to be run next Saturday are sure to bring a great field to the post in this historic race which bears the name of the first president of this track the late Colonel M Lewis Clark Tills event is as old as the Kentucky Derby and until IflOl was run as a threeyearold stake as sort of a companion race or sequel of tliei Derby In 1902 it was changed to a race for threeyearolds and over and under these conditions it has since re ¬ mained In the old days it was often that in this race the Derby winner failed to repeat his triumph but several noted horses added still greater luster to their names by also taking this big stake into camp The winners of the Derby in the Clark stakes only embrace ten horses these being Hindoo Buchanan Spokane Riley Azra Chant Halrna Plaudit Lieutenant Gibson and His Eminence Since it Jias been as at present no Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner has won it but one Kentucky Oaks winner is among its victors namely T C McDowells fine mare Kings Daughter In the old days several horses that ran second in the Derby won the Clark stakes they being Creedmoor Fal ¬ setto Runnymede Bersan Blue Wing Jim Gore Gallifct Ben Edur Ornament and Corsine Sluce it has been for older horses the only horse to run second in the Derby and then win the Clark Handicap is J N Camdens Miami which captured the event in 1901 Those thought to be probable starters in the big race Saturday are Roamer John Guild Bradleys Choice Chalmers Short Grass Double Eagle Leo Ray Prince Iler mis Buckhorn Belloc Waterblossom Banquet Robert Bradley David Craig Uncle Bryn and Hodge Both yesterday His rider had orders from trainer John Walters to merely let him canter The noted son of The Commoner never appeared in a more healthy condition being strong and lusty and few horses now in training outlook this crack of George M Heiidries stable at the present time It in an ¬ ticipated that before the season is out Great Britain will race with as much distinction In 1915 as he has In his other seasons on the turf turfIn In his last race at Lexington John W Schorrs threeyearold Lindenthal was badly jumped on behind and he has a much swollen leg as a con ¬ sequence Trainer J P Schorr thinks that this son of Star Shoot will not lie able to race any ¬ way for a month on account of this mishap mishapThe The good horse Frog Legs owned by this Memphis turfman will be shipped down here in a few days from J O Kernes Keenland Farm near Lexington and again put in training with Schorrs other horses quartered at Douglas Park It is the gen ¬ eral impression of all the veterinarians who have examined him that lie will stand training and racing again He has not raced since the spring meetings here of 1913 He was mated with two mares last season one owned by Schorr and the other by J E Madden It is not known whether tiie latter has had a foal but the mare mated to him by his owner proved barren This season lie has been mated to eight mares If Frog Legs comes back on the turf in his oldtime form this season lie will be a great addition to the older brigade now racing as when at his best be was one of the best racers that ever wore the colors of the Memphis
