The latter was in a prominent iiosition I jus! before rounding the first turn, where be fell. ] A moment later Malheur, en which Gamer had the mount, fell over the protrate horse and rider. Gar- 1 ner emerged from the mixup unscathed, hut Ganz 1 remained motiotiiess where he fell and was carried to the jockeys quarters. After a superficial ex- initiation he was rushed in an uucouseious state 1o a nearby hospital. His injuries are said to be of a grave nature. Gatiz is a j popular rider and is regarded as one of tin- best i in the country. The stewards at once began an investigation la piace the blame for the fall. It ] was tiie general opinion of those in a position to observe the mishap that it probably was due to t lteaeh Comlier cuffing himself and bringing about bis own fall on account of his awkward action. ; Jockey Goose, brother of the hurt rider, obtained permission to cancel his engagements for the lest of the afternoon and accompanied his brother to the i hospital. ] Summerlik weather and a well-balanced card served to attract another big gathering to the track. An outstanding disappointment of the afternoon came in tin- third race when First Degree, an over- whelming first choice, failed to run to a place. His , li-or showing was in part due to the faulty riding that Acton gav him. The victory of Counterpart in this race by a nose ovcr Erin was attended with considerable profit for his backers. Incidentally it narked a decided form reversal on the part of the winner. Favorites and second choices fared well during the afternoon on the whole and the majority of those speculatively inclined w re well rewarded.
