NOTES OF THE TURF FROM OTHER LANDS. II. Jelliss the well-known flat race rider, who served bis apprenticeship with Mr. T. Jennings, has applied for a commission in the army. The death is aunoune-ed at the French front of Cyril Carter son of Richard Carter, the well-kiio.vu trainer and brother «f Percy Carter, who is now on the tiring line. He was first cousin to the late Alec Carter. Senile half dozen trainers at Newmarket are e-l.sing their establishments, among them being B. Jarvis. Dawson Waugh. J. Bell and Claude llalsev. The two last-named have joined the army. C Leader has also applied for a commission, and should this lie obtained Mr. T. Leader will have three sons in the army. Sprinting is undoubtedly the forte of Friar Marcus. A g.»id two-voar-olel. he went off during the micidle | crioil if the present year when an at tempt was made to get him to stay anything ove-r a iuile Kept to short courses, he put up two really meritorious displays. Providing lie winters well, the Kings colt raav easily prove the crack sprinter of 1916. Mr. Stanley Wootton. the ex-jockey and owner .f Whitcnohi. which beat King Georges Marconi in the Houghton Handicap at New mark.-!, is a lieit-ti-iiant in the- 7lh Koval Fusiliers, unci was uiuler onb-rs to le-avc for tUe front. Stanley Wootton was the first of the flat-race jockeys to enlist when the war broke out. his elder brother. Frank Wootton. cpiie-kly following suit, others being William Griggs and William Saxby. Linacre has jumped into a leading place among the Australian sires. He had a wonderfully good season last year, ami he has opened the present mcing year well. His son. Mistieo, won both the Hannans Handicap and Kalgoorlie Cup recently, and Garlin brought him into prominece again by easily winning the Chelmsford Stakes. Garlin has lieen one of the greatest bargains sent into an , Australian sale ring for many years, as Mr. Mark Thompson was able to get bim for eighty guineas. After winning ,483 in stakes, lie passed him on to bis prese-nt owner for 2,000 guineas. In the Jockey flub Cup at Newmarket, October 2s. Se-in in Law repeated his vie-tory of a twelvemonth liefore. Ou that occasion he only had the moderate Gondovar to beat, while now Lanius was among the opposition, and the hero of the Jockey Club Makes ran the Cesarewitch winner pretty close in the wagering, but Son in Law scored in a canter from Mr. Neumanns horse, which was followed home by Gadabout. The Cup has before this been won twice or more by the same horse. St. Gatien scored in three successive years. Radium won twice, also Aleppo. Other winners include Florizel II.. Black Sand. Zinfaudel, Pretty Polly, Bachelors Button and Willonyx. A double event was brought off at Newmarket October 2S for Lord Durham. The Melusine filly, which had already won a couple of nursery handicaps, disputed favoritism with Analogy for the Richmond Nursery. Mr. Hultons colt having run Telephone Girl to a half length at the previous outing. He now made no show, however, and the Melusine filly won easily from Frusquius Pride and Athletic, which dead-heated for second honors. The Ditch Mile Welter Handicap followed, and Lux. which claimed the largest following, gave Rlckaby another winning mount in the same colors. Tuxedo made his first appearance of the year in this event. He has done good work with Pominern. and only lost the spoils by a neck, with Mr. Hultons Buskin next best. Many winners of the Dewhurst Plate have subsequently had wonderful careers, including Ormonde. Donovan. Rock Sand. Lemlterg and Bayardo, but .others have failed, like Democrat, to do big things in their classic age. Atheling won the Dewhurst Plate this year for Mr. Huttou. who enjoyed a successful week, and the son of Desmond will no doubt be considered by many the- best of bis age. though there can he little in it between him and Lord Derbys Canyon on their close running, the latter conceding one pound and sex allowance. It is in Athelings favor, however, that he has won both the races contested by him, and at his onlv earlier outing finished in front of All Bey. Atheling is heavily engaged next year, and holds liabilities in the Guineas, the IVrby and St. Leger. It is sinieie-ly to be- bope-d thai i-veuls tvi|| ,.|i:,b|,. he colt to demonstrate his merits as a three Year old. — Loudon Sportsman.
