[ I i Consignment Represents Choice Purchases Made in j Mother Country for Sir John Hendrie, Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario. I I i Toronto. «»nt . . Beeaanhet 24.— His Honor, the Lien- ; tenant-Governor f Ontario. Sir John Hendrie, was | otle of the breeders of bloodstock on this side of the i water to take advantage of the opportunity of re- plenishing his establishment afforded liy war condi- : tions in Britain, and seven highly-bred animals have i just reached the Valley Farm at Hamilton. They i were selected liy Slrathcarn B. Thomson, well-known ! Hamilton K|iortsmau and former champion amateur ; iKixer. who also brought something for himself. The I lot for Sir John Hendrie are all young sto-.-k. whose 1 racing abilities are yet to be thoroughly tested, but 1 whose blood is that of the Ix-st families in the Eng- lish Sti:d Book. While prices for high-class stock in England are far below those of two years ago. the sccom-lianying exiienses and the numberless restrictions as to cx|Mirtatb n are surli as to almost discourage purchasers from this side of the Atlantic. It is said that many yearlings and others .KMight last summer for American stud farms are still in England, the buyers having Iteen unable to comply with all the requirements hedging about the permit for exportation. The horses were shipped from Fugland to Montreal in charge of I-iuncclot Foster, for seventeen years assistant trainer to Joseph Cannon, celebrated English trainer. Mr. Thomson stated that tin- voyage was a little tough and tedious, but the horses did well. "The captain and crew gave us every assistance iu their power." continued the new arrival. Regarding conditions in England at present. Mr. TIkiiiisou sai l: "Founds have be«Mi turne l into live-ihilling piece*, insofar as the value of thoroughbred lock is concerned. Yearlings that three years ago would fetch 5.»K 0 under the liamine.- were sold lor as low as .500 — smart, well-grown animals out of mares that have produced winners and by sires whose fees range from one hundred to four hundred guineas. A few of the richest owners have retained the pick of their yearlings, hoping that there mav be enough racing next year to enable them to test their speed with others of their own age that their value may be established materially beyond the prospective yearling value that their breeding and conformation entitle them to. Two-year-olds that have won or shown some form can be itoiight from .«HM to .5110. and are rinding purchasers from all parts of the world. A large uumlier of marcs in foal are Icing shipped away to the Fatted States. Australia. India. Denmark and the Argentine for prices less than their stallion Car.** Ease are seven horses the like of which have l»erh:iS never come t Canada, as far as h 1 oxl lines are concerned.
