SHORT PRICES LAID AT JUAREZ. Commenting on various features of the present meeting at Juarez. Walter II. Pearce said in a letter to the Louisville Courier-Journal of Tuesday: •Long shots have not been successful at this meeting, but the pikers continue to hope against hope that some afternoon they will be able to put an "eagle bird over the plate. It seems impossible to secure better than 8 to 1 against any horse that stands a possible chance. Izzy Ham. who hail charge of the ring last year, was known as the original tight wad. but he takes a back seal when compared with Frank Shannon, now in charge of affairs. "It must be admitted that Shannon is an expert handicapper and a fair price maker. He ligur.-. what the prices should be each morning and then cuts the prices in hall. Any time a horse is as ■sad as 20 to 1 it is certain that he should be at least 100 to 1. "Bookmaker Shannon is an interesting character. He hails from Gallatin. Team., and has been around the tracks lor many years. He is a Stndeat of human nature, as is best explained by the following remarks: " Why give odds of 10 to 1 against a horse when you know that the player will take 5 to 1 if he likes the animal. A hook should be conducted on the same principles as any other business., Postage stamps sell for a cent, two cents, etc.. and son cant get any reduction at the cut-rate stores, but Christinas conies but once a year, so dont be giving away presents to a lot of suckers. It makes no difference in the long ruu, however, for even if the race player gels that to which he is entitled, he is going broke in the long run. and one should not In-so cnld as to prolong the agony. Kreak the player as soon as you can and put him out of his iniseiv." "It might be added that iKiokmaker Shannon lias put a lot of people out of their misery at Juarez this winter. It would be difficult to find many regulars with the price of a meal. When you are forced to take 1 to 2 against horses which figure to be as good as eveu money or better it is certain that the old bankroll wont last long."
