RIDING CAREER OF WALTER GEIGGS. Although he has never wound up a season at the head of the winning riders list, Walter Griggs generally contrives to be well up with the leaders. Like his elder brother. William, the subject of this .-ketch was apprenticed to Eobcrt Sherwood, the St. Cation House trainer. At one time he rode as first jockey for Mr. J. B. Joel, but more recently he has been attached to the Clarehaven establishment. For Mr. Joel he has ridden two St. Leger winners The former of the e triumphs was scored on Your Majesty seven years ago. The son of Persimmon was not at his l est in the spring, and cut a pi or figure in the Two Thousand, but by September he had found his form, and was backed against the field for the Doncaster classic. This he had no difficulty in winning from White Eagle, the Derby ami Oaks heroine. Signorinetta. finishing well down the course. Jriggs had previously won the Eclipse Stakes and other races on Your Majesty. Jriggs second St. Leger victory was obtained last year on Black Jester, one of the easiest winners in the history of the race. Black Jester not only ran clean away from Kenuymore. Greening ham and the rest, but created a fresh time record. Criggs only other classic win to date was gained through the agency of Snow Marten, which cantered away with the New Oaks last summer. Second on that occasion was Bright, owned by Mr. J. B. Joel, in whose colors, as stated, his previous classic victories had lieen achieved. Jriggs has not yet got nearer than second in the Derby, finishing in that position on Jaeger in Tagalies year, i Jriggs has won a fair number of important han dicaps. He was on the back of Portland Bay when that animal carried off the Wokingham Stakes in 1MB and the year following. He was also on Buckwheat when Mr. Donnellys colt defeated Hayden. Simonson and a half dozen others in the Duke "t York Stake* at Keaiptoa Park. He scored on the same horse in the Brighton Cup. while he won the Derby Cup on Stickup. anil won a Liverpool Cap on Dean Swift. More recently he won the City and Suburban on Mr. Sol Joels Maiden Erlegh. Another important winner ridden by him was Kil-broney. which beat four opponents in the Good-wood Cup of l.tll. Last season he rode Kings Day to victory in the Brocklesby Stakes. Figaro in the July Stake-. I.anius in the Jockey Club Makes and Argos in lb- Middle Park Plate.
