i HEAVY TRACK RACING AT NEW ORLEANS. J Grumpy Takes the Chief Race — Mars Cassidy in Winning Form. New Orleans. La.. January IS. — There was a sudden change for the wane in climatic conditions today, but the a I tendance at the Fair Grenada was again surprisingly large. The hard rain of last night made the track sticky aud holding and was responsible for the withdrawal of many of the carded starters. A handicap at one mile, with some good ones engaged, was the feature, with two selling handicaps at three-quarters as secondary attractions. The feature race resulted in a victory for Grumpy over Dr. Larriek and Goldcrest Boy. The last named failed to show the good form he did on the opening day and Dr. Larriek. after threatening to make a runaway of it for three-quarters, faded away in the final drive. Mars Cassidy made a promising local debut by winning the third race over Lucky K. and Fail-Helen in somewhat easy fashion. The Spirit furnished an upset iu the second by winning over Harhard and Ziu Del. with the favorite. Stout Heart, trailing distantly and showing poor form. Mico Girl repeated her former victory by leading throughout in the opening dash. In the fifth Brian Born staggered home a neck in idvitn-e of Lair oKirkealdy. with Shrewsbury third. They were a poor band, but furnished the afternoons best finish. After dismounting from Stout Heart. Judge Murphy issued an order of suspension against N. Burger for incompetent riding. Willis Verneuilli, of this city, at one time a prominent bookmaker, ended his life yesterday at his home by shooting. It is said that he lost a fortune by the Teutonia Bank failure and this was partially responsible for the suicide. The program beeka for the third week of the meeting were distributed by Secretary .lo-eph McLennan to hoist men this afternoon. The l ook shows an increase in some of the purses. The minimum amount in handicaps other than selling lning 00, while for allowance races i0 is given. The first of the condition books for the San Antonio. Texas, race meeting of thirty days, announced to begin February 20. were distributed, the pan eel to lie 00. with five races daily. Arthur Mcknight has been appointed starter.
