I* — * MONEY -EARNING HORSES WHICH WON ,000 OR MORE IN LAST YEARS RACING *« Of things out of the ordinary in the racing of 1915, perhaps the most important was the way in which the splendid and unbeaten filly Regret detud I and smashed all traditions when she won the Ken- tacky Derby. Forty times before it had been mil 1 and fallen to the colts and geldings, so that it .» had grown to be an article of faith and belief that none of her sex could win a Kentucky Derby. But 1 this 1m iinv filly from out of the east made short I work of all such theories and of the band of good 1 colts contesting for its honors. Whether Regret is . to be raced in 1010 or retired to the seclusion of i the paddock is known only to her owner. But in i either event, it remains that to her belongs a dis- 1 tinction never before attained by one of her sex. 1 She is unquestionably a first-class young mare and. I for all anyone knows to the contrary, may have been i entirely capable of .holding her own with the chain- pion Koamer. She was the one really high-class 1 three-year-old of 1015, all of the others, even The I Finn and Waterblossom, ranking far below her. Of the elder division of horses. Borrow greatly dis- I tinguished himself and was in the first flight of the 1 handicap horses of the year, a .horse of speed, power and a superior weight carrier. But. both fit . and well, it is sale to say that Roamer was capable of giving him all of seven iKmnds and a heating. It I is true that Borrow beat him pointless in t lie Ken- i tucky Handicap, but Roamer was not himself that I day and Borrow was in superb condition. Later on. I at Saratoga, in the Merchants anil Citizens Ilandi- I cap. something in the way of a direct line to their respective capabilities was furnished. Roamer car- . ried 120 pounds to 123 on Borrow and beat him by a half length over a course of a mile and three- 1 sixteenths in 1:89, the race being truly run. This race illuminated another jioint. Mr. Belmonts chain- . pion Stromboli carried 121 pounds and finished a good 1 third, but beaten three lengths by Borrow. A truer exposition of the relative form of three grand racers 1 could not have been arranged. They were the three best handicap horses of the year as incontestibly as i Regret was the best three-year-old. I In the racing of 1015 the number of horses starting was 3.700. This was a slight gain over 1914. When 1 3.632 started. Of those starting, 2.009 won more or I less money, by virtue ot finishing first, second or third iu races. This left 1.001 horses which racjd ■ without winning a dollar. There is nothing singular in this. In all countries where racing is conducted, it is the stern test of competition on the race track which determines the selection of the fittest and relegates the ineffectives to the obscurity properly awaiting all equine weaklings and derelicts. Of tlie more successful horses, 102 won $.1,000 or more. This was a falling off from 1914. when the corres- ! ponding winners numbered 202. In 1913 it was 208. ■ The horses which won 0,000 or more numbered fourteen, as compared with fifteen in 1914. thirteen in 191:; and six in 1912. Exactly fifty other horses ! won more than .001 and less than 0,000. Of the winners of 0,000 or more, the leader was tb..; seven-year-old gelding. Borrow. Star Jasmine was six years old. Prince Ilermis five years old. Hodge. I Stromboli and Roamer were foiir-year-olds. The Finn. Regret. Royal ft. and Waterblossom thrcv-year-olds and the two-year-olds were Dominant, l Thunderer. Dodge and George Smith. There is reason for holding that some of the two-year-olds of 10 1 5 were of extra high class. Certainly this is true of Dominant and probably of Thunderer. There is a shade of doubt in the case of this brother to Regret because of the close call that Bromo gave him in tlie Futurity. Possibly that doubt may be dissolved by assuming that Bromo also belongs to the star class. On some of his racing, Ceorge Smith can be made out to be a great colt. His purchase by Mr. John Sanford for a big price was one of the marked transactions of the year. Dodge was another colt of high rank and a remarkable mud runner. Others of possibly a slightlv lower class, but of great worth, as demonstrated In their racing, were Bulse. King Neptune, Blaekie Daw. Ormcsdale. Big Smoke. Friar Rock and Checks. Of the fillies Puss in Boots. Pleione and Jacoba were probably best. There is reason for hoping that some of these beat two-year-olds will turn out to be high-class three-year-olds, that reason being that thev will be railed U| on in 1016 to meet such English-bred colts of proved excellence as Clapperbill and Star Hawk, among others. If still in England both of these would certainly he given grave consideration in connection with the Derby of 1010. American racing has never before presented such -m interesting problem as that arising out of the wholesale importation of choicely bred young English horses bought at the sales in 1915 in England. Their injection into our racing of 1916 is vested with pleasant anticipation of contests of the most exciting character. The horses which won ,000 or more in the racing of 1915 were: Horse. A.
