LARGE ATTENDANCE AGAIN RETURN OF SUMMER WEATHER AND A EAST TRACK HELPS AT NEW ORLEANS. J. W. Fuller Takes His First Race of the Meeting with Colinet — Mico Girl Defeats Norumbega Luckily. New Orleans. La., January 20. — The return of suninierlikc weather restored the former good racial renditions here and was responsible lor an immense ;itteiulanee at the Fair Grounds this afternoon. The track, while not at its best, was fast and the diversified program saw evenly balanced fields in each, of the races, which resulted in close finishes and plenty of action in the early running. The handicap at one mile and seventy yards under selling conditions had the most prominent place en the card and furnished another success for the Marrone stable when Ambrose led for the entire wa. and won easily from Cliff Field, which repres-•entcd the Beverwyck Stable. Frank Nolan having acquired him yesterday from L. J. Carey. The w inner showed much speed and under a vigorous ride was kept in front for the entire distance. The juvenile scramble resulted in a hard foug it struggle between Mico Girl and Norumbega. The j former won and it was her third straight success. * .She was a good bit aided today by an inner po-t position and her alertness at the barrier. Norumbega was overhauling her fast at the end. .1. V. Fuller took his first purse of the meeting when Colinet. coming with a terrific burst of speed in the last eighth, overhauled Dew Drop in the third race. Blue Cap had an easy time of it in the second race, with Woodstone second and Rose Marian tjiird. After the finish L. J. Carey, Sam Louis anl R. T. McKeever put in claims for Woodstone and the last named got the Ben h.irse for 8800. Cardigan, which was somewhat in the nature of a "good thing." won the fifth race after a hard drive to outstay Anna Kruter and Talebearer. R. J. Mackenzie and trainer .Tack Adkins departed today for IjOalsvUle. where they will look over their horses and then go for a brief visit to French Lick Springs. Todays visitors included William A. Iinkerton, lead of the well-known detective establishment. Korfhage. which was claimed by George llennessy out of the second race yesterday, spread his fool in the running of that race and will probably be out of commission for some time. Jockey Liileys poor riding here probably will result in a transfer of his contract by trainer William Midgely. Gilford A. Cochran still holds a call on the rider, but trainer Midgely is dissatisfied with ids work and will probably keep him off the Cochran horses. Hanover had the mount on Norumbega in the opening dash today. J. C. Yeager will leave Saturday for West Baden and nbsent himself from the track until Derby day at lyouisxille. lie has fared well during his stay li re and is one of the principal winners who have operated from the ground. C. T. Werthlnjrton claimed Anna Kruter from the filth race for 00. It. McDerniott was given a sharp lecture by Judge Murphy after the last race for his weak rid in;: of Harry Lauder. .Mary Ann K. eauic out of her race in a bad way ami trainer Coring is of the opinion that she has broken down.
