February 1.;. — The sport from now on will overshadow that which has me before and it will likewise surpass anything in a racing line provided at a winter course in recent rears. In some respects. newer before in the history of American winter racing lias the present meetthj lioen approached. There have been meetings at which more stakes were offered and in connect io.i with which the class of horses in the Bggnef Ite may have been superior to those now at the Fair Grounds, but for downright enthusiasm, liberal patronage and wholesome racing, this meeting I.a-overshadowed all others hold of late. Every day brings an influx of new arrivals. Thev are simply astounded at the magnitude of the action here. It is beyond the comprehension of those in northern •ities and elsewhere. It is necessarv for one to be on the spot to obtain a full realization of the bigness of the Fair Grounds meeting. That the business men of this city fullv appreciate what racing is doing for the Crescent it v. was shown la-t week when an extension id the racing was advocated. The extension bad the endorsement of many prominent people in these parts, but with the recusation that it would not be advisable to race during the leuten season, the project was abandoned. Many notables in the turf world are expected here next week: among the newcomers will be Charles r. Grainger, president of the New Louisville Jockey Club and member of the Kentuekv State Hacing Commission: 1". .1. Harden, Jefferson Livingston. Charles r. During the past week the Schorr stable won only one race, it being the npOMBt week for this establishment since the meeting open. d. The Hers purse, winnings can lie attributed to a large extent to the consistent racing of Basle, which has won three handicaps. One hundred an. I twelve owners have shared in the purse distribution to date to the extent of 00 or more and twent] -eight have won ,000 or over. The first ten in the list of winning owners and the amounts won are: .1. V. Bcborr, ,065: K. Herz. 83,110; Mainne Stable. ,440: C. J. Brockmiller. S2.2S0: ,;. A. Cochran. ,120: P. M. Civill .101: V. C. Metzger ,085: .1. T. Looaey, ,805; T. Clyde. ,850; .1. MacMsnns, ,550. By riding f ur winners during tlie pest week Jockey I". Koeiticr increased his lead over the other riders and he now has twenty two firsts to hi-credit, with Jockey .1. Kederia closest to him. with lifteen. Jockey M.
