TRAINER WHO RODE CLASSIC WINNERS. A good many of the successful trainers of the present day were in their earlier years equally successful in the saddle. Among such must certainly be included the presiding genius at Ioxhill. W. 1. Robinson, who was one of the foremost middle-weignt riders of the eighties and early nineties. One of his best years was that in which Queen Victoria celebrated her Jubilee, as it was in that particular season that he rode his first classic winner. •his being Kilwarlin. which won the St. Leger from the Derby winner. Marry Hampton. Kilwarlin was the property of Lord Rodney, anil i month or so later Kobinson gained another notable victory in the orange and-purple livery of that nobleman, when he triumphed over Bendigo and others in the Cesarewitch. It is not uninteresting to note that he put up no less than five iiounds overweight on this occasion. I he following year Robinson won his second St. Leger in Lord Cnlthorpes filly. Seabreeze, which defeated Chill ington by three lengths, with the favorite. Ayrshire, which had won the Two Thousand and Derby, unplaced. Some four years later he scored a fourth classic triumph on Bona Vista. which won the Two Thousand from St. Angelo and aria. B na Vista afterwards attained eminence as tlie sire of Cyllene. On turning his attention to training. Robinson ao u made his mark, and during few years over a long period has he failed to annex one or other of the Important races that come up annually t r competition. In the space at our disposal it Is impossible to deal with Robinsons big winners even in a superficial way. Among the earliest one recalls is Clorane. which won the Royal Hunt Cup of 1s.i." for Mr. Basset, and the following season carried off the Lincolnshire Handicap with 130 poi i da in the saddle. Which reminds one that Robinson has a par-tlalty for the first great handicap of the season. which he won three years in succession. Following in alio came Winktields Iride. while a twelvemonth later the spoils were borne off by Prince Barealdlae. Robinsons "Lincoln" successes did not stop here, as s;x years ago he saddled his fourth winner in Cinderello. With Winktields Pride he had previously won the Cambridgeshire, the colt starting favorite after having been on offer at 20O to 1 a few days before. other well-known horsps trained by Robinson that one readily recalls to mind were Polar Star, which wou the Julii-lee Handicap of 1907, carrying a record weight for a three-year-old: White Eagle, which won the Pity and Suburban two years later and the versatile !: -.-., ,blen. Robinson has yet to saddle an actual winner of tin- Derby, though he had an exasperatlag experience three years ago, w lien Craganoiir. which was in his stable-, finished first in the great Epsom event, only to l»e disqualified in favor of the second. Aboyeur. He however, had the satisfaction of taking the St. Leger of tic same year with the Inconsistent Nrht Hawk, while he has also trained a winner of the remaining classics. — Imdon Sporting Life.
