i ] i i ; ] S. B. JOELS GREAT BREEDING STUD. Splendid Horses Housed Where Polymelus Reigns as Premier Sire. A few particulars about the breeding stud at Maiden Krlegh may not be out of place. This establishment, although on a large scale, has not reached the huge proper tioaa of the stud of his brother at Childwicklniry. tint it contains over forty mares and the three stallions. Polymelus. Sunder and Long Set. The last superseded St. Denis, which has gone to Polegate. where Mr. Joel has leased the Duke of Devonshires breeding farm, that nobleman having determined, owing to increased taxation, to retire from the turf. This step was taken by Mr. Joel to accommodate the yearlings bred at Reading and to relieve the paddocks there. Polymelus has long since established himself as a sire and is now the leading stallion in the country. He is a magnificent horse, now in his prime, with a subscription list full at 300 guineas. Sunder is five years his junior and of a different type altogether, but a grand specimen of the thoroughbred none the less, and although built on a large scale is a typical son of Snndridge. His dam. Divorce Court, is a lovely mare but strangely unfortunate at the stud, for Sunder was ner first and only living foal. In the following season she was barren to Bachelors Button, next had a dead foal by bim and then nUaaed to Poly aw Ion, Sundrnlge, St. Denis. Baa-star and Sunflower II., truly a disappointing record, after starting so auspiciously with Sumter, one of the fastest borate "f bis day. Long Set. without living quite in the top class, was a sterling, good and honest race horse, with suine fine performances to his credit. He was acquired for ."lint guineas after winning a selling race at Lincoln, and while under the charge of Hatho brought off some line coups for Mr. Joel, including the Cambridgeshire, the Lincolnshire Handicap, the Newbury Spring Cup. the Royal Hunt Cup, the Liverpool Summer Cup and the Doncaster Cup. He is a beautiful bay horse of rare quality, throwing back to St. Simon. Galopin and Sterling, and at !ts peaads it is needlena to say that he has been well patronized. St. Denis, which made a big hit with Bedfern, and is a tine St. Simon bone, stands at Polegate. while Bachelors Button, winner of the Ascot Cup. ami the only horse to heat Pretty Polly in this country, has been sent to France. Mr. Joel has reduced his string of two-year-olds by one-half, but has twenty-live yearlings coming on. by Polymelus, Sunder. St. Denis ami Prince Palatine. Among the mares that visited Polvmelus but year were Quintessence, Prettv Polly. Absurdity dam of Absurd and Black Jester, Cheshire Cat. St. Wimleline. Doiinetta, I.a Roche winner of the Oaks, Pearnian dam of Corcyrai. the kings two mares. Zulema and Vain Air, and Ionis dam of Sunstar. which a few days ago dropped a fine colt foal at Childwickbury. — London Sportsasan.
