BEVERWYCK STABLE REACHES LOUISVILLE. Polistena in the Wingfiold Stable Excites General Commendation of Experts. Louisville. Ky.. March 30. — The racing string of the Albany. N. V.. turfman. F. J. Nolan, whose horses race under the name of the Beverwyefc Stalde, has arrived at Churchill Downs from the Gravesend track in charge of trainer George Ze-igh-r. The string is headed by the Kentucky Derby candidate. Lena Misha. which handsome chestnut colt is already fairly advanced in his preparation for the race. This son of King James only raced three times as a two-year-old anil his one win was scored 1 in tlie Juvenile Stakes last spring at Bebaeat Park, arkea he beat out Ormesclale. Kilmer and a band | of other good starters, running the five-eighths of that race in :59. He, as well as tlie rest of this • string, skipped well and he is a good-looking col;. ■ with a fine way of going. The other horses in the stable are Old Koenig, which with Lena Misha is l engaged in both the Clark and Kentucky handicaps, but was not i ntered by his owner in the Derby; Henry Jr.. a maiden three year-old : Dro.nl-nought, the two-year-old brother to Great Britain, . and a pair of other two-year-olds in Top of the Wave and Alone at Last. The riding for this stable will be done thi I rear ~ by the noted jockey Eddie Dugan, who in rixty-five mounts last year was twenty-one tines first. giving him the creditable percentage of H2. It is ■ probable that he will join trainer Zeigler here in the next ten days and. by exercising the Nolan 1 horses, will get into good riding condition so as to be at his best when the time comes for him to take f the mount on Lena Misha in tlie Kentucky Derby. While tills, string is only a half-dozen horses in number, it mi kes up in the quality of its boraea, . which all look like the genuine article in tie- way t of stake hot en. old Koenig has started bur oace f and. having then failed to win. lie is now about as s promising a maiden three-year-old as then- is in ii training, a- he wis highly tried as a yearliaf and 1 in his early two-year oM form. Jockey J. Kederia has arrived here from Hot • Springs to tike up his work in the stable of .1. - Livingston, for which turfman lie will rib- this • year. He has already picked his choice- of the Livingston - •table for ids mount in the Derby and 1 lauded on lolroma. This will leave trnine-r Brandt t to select the rider on Col. Vennie. as this pair will il both probably go to the post. The latter good colt t has been a bit off for tlie- last week, which eaaacd d trainer Brandt t.. let up up °n him in his work, but t he is now ove-r all sickness anil in the last few days has been eat on the- track again. Trainer J Brandt thinks if he- has no other set hack, that bis recent sickness a ill not prevent him being ready for r the big race. The racing stable of George Wingfield, which is s ; n x | s 0 B s J , , J ■ J J . J . 1 | • ■ l . ~ ■ 1 f . t f s ii 1 • - • - 1 t il t d t now in training quarters at the Downs in charge of i trainer George Strate. is fourteen strong. The- older c horses are Celesta. Scarlet Oaks. Star Shooter. Wa- c ■hoe Belle. Mary Jay and the English four-year- c old bay mare 1olistena. I It is eiuestionable if as grand a looking young • mare as the1 latte-r was ever housed at the Downs. 1 She- stands away above sixteen hands high and is i masculine- in appearance with ii beautiful bony head and an exceedingly stout neck and shoulders with a wonderful depth of heart. She was tin- 1 beaten in England and in her one race there last I year .-is a three--year-old won in a field of twenty -seven starters. Trainer Strate did not enter Polistena in any of • the big races of this spring and the coming sum- J me-r for tie- re-ason that he wants to thoroughly acclimate her before- sending her to race against the best horses in training. There is no doubt that if she stands training on American tracks that she J will sooner or later cut a big figure in racing in ■ this country. She has all the appearance of a mare that, when in proper racing condition, is unbeatable and when done with the turf is sure tO become a queen in the stud. Wingfield paiel ove-r 0,000 for this young mare in England and he- got a bargain in the opinion of all good judges of horses who have looked her over since she has arrived here. The two-year-olds in the Wingfield stable number eight head and are as follows: Amalgamator, b. c, by Duke of Ormonde — Compensate. Deckhand, br. g. by Jon Carey — Afamada. Fancy Feathers, b. f. by Ossary — Chaste. Golden Dragon, ch. c. by Duke of Ormonde — Rose of China. Plush, b. f, by Duke of Ormonde — Angleta. Sonata Set. ch. c. by Duke of Ormonde — Dora I. Triolet, b. f. by Orsini — Zenobia. Bdna F.. br. f, by Montgomery — Marion Rose. The latter filly is one- of the first of the get of tie- great race horse Montgomery, which is now at Wingfields breeding farm in Nevada. Fancy Feathers is a sister to Smoke House, which raced so well as a two-year-old in Kentucky for trainer William Wallace- a few years back. Golden Dragon I is a half-brother to Besslein. ji two-year-old whines last year, and Amalgamator is a brother to the winner of last year. Favour. Deckhands dam, Afamada, was a brilliant racing filly in Kentue-ky in her day and among Other winning races as a two-year-old won the Cllpactta Stakes at Latonia in 1S97. beating the famous Martha II., which in the stud produced Artful which, until Regret ■hawed up, has always been regarded as the greatest filly that ever wore the Whitney colors. There- are- several recent importations made by Wingfield. which are now quartered at his Nevada breeding plant, which will join Strates stable here during the local racing season. They were sent we-st to rest up from their long journey across the sea. So far W. Brazed is the- only jockey that Wingfield has undi-r engageme-nt. The boy was taken sick after he arrived at New Orleans from Juarez, but he is now entirely we-11 again and trainer Strife is well pleased with him as a riiler. Strate has entire Management of the Wingfie-bl horses and sold tie- stables Kentucky Derby candidate. Ske-e-r Face, because he- thought he was getting a good price for him at SN.000. ile- bought the colt for Wingfield for 00. so the son eif Hippodrome- proved a good investment to i the Nevada turfman. He regrets that the stable- new will have no Derby starter, but as he re- marked, "there is another year." About this time last year B. B. Bradle-y maile the- announcement that he would win the Kentucky Derby this y.-ar with the colt Blind Baggage and a message- received from Idle Hour Farm a few clays ago tells that this son of Sain has met [ eTery expectation in his development and at L present seems like a coming champion. Blind Baggage- did not race last year, because be was one of the- survivors in the disastrous railroad wreck near Cincinnati last summer, in which a , number of race horses were killed outright. Up to that time- he had shown great form in his train -i ing trials and was being reserved for his eastern l engagements at Saratoga, where he- was being , shipped to. by the way of the- Windsor track. Hi- got a bad shaking up in that wreck, but. according to all accounts, he has long since re co, -i creel from his then slighr injuries. He is the first pro.luee of the high-class filly Love-not. which ran third to Novelty ami Bashtl in the Fu turity of l9lo. and which it was claiamil at tbe . tfane she would have- won that great stake had she had an e-epial start from the barrier with the- two which finished in front of her in that race. Trainer Hammou, who has charge of B. B. Brad- b-ys stable, also says he- is pleased with the con " dition of Blind Baggages stable companion, the colt Desmonds Day. which he brought over from England for Bradley last year. This colt only raced three tines as a two-year-oh! and is as | richly bred as any of the English or Frencb-bred ", three-year-olds that are entered in the- Derby. Braeile-y has never been fortunate enough to win i the Kentue-ky Derby and it might be that this will i prove his year. ,
