FLITTERGQLFS EASY WIN TAKES THE WOODWARD HANDICAP AT BOWIE WITHOUT BEING EXTENDED. Lewis Garth Bids Up Three Horses and Gets Them All — A Fair Offer to the Horsemen — Big Projects for Havana. Raltimore. Md.. April 5. — The Woodward Handicap, which was offered as the feature of the Rowie card this afternoon resulted in another victory for G. A. Muller, when Flittergold easily disposed of his opposition at three -quarters. Re-hind the Relmont cast-off were Gloaming and Presumption. The race was the best contested of the day and the winner was much the best being under a steady pull at the end. The time of 1:13 for the distance equalled the track record. Again small fields predominated and the races were in the main framed for the cheaper grade of platers. The racing however was of the interesting variety and profitable to the public, as the majority of the winners were well supiiorted. The weather showed a decided improvement over the past few days, being warm and Bummerlike. ThCtC was a noticeable increase in the attendance and speculation was brisk throughout the day. The selling race troubles broke out fresh after the running of the first race and resulted in Good Counsel changing hands, the colt sold to Lewis Garth on his bid of 00. an advance of 00. Anoon had to be much the best to be returned the winner in the third race over Piquette, for he met with considerable roughing. The second runup of the day followed the running of the sixth race, when I wis Garth secured Dryad from A. C. Parretto on his bid of 00, an advance of 00 over the entered price. The bidding was in retaliation for the loss of Candle from the Garth establishment at Montreal last fall to Parretto, via the runup route. The horsemen have petitioned the Southern Maryland Association for an increase in the purse values, so as to have no race for less than 00. They were told that just as soon as they would be more liberal with their entries, the raise would be granted. For the past few days the races have not been filling as well as was expected. There are horses enough on the grounds and. with the improved weather conditions, it is probable the entries will soon be more liberal. H. G. Bedwell, who has been confined to his home for several days with a severe cold, was reported to be in a much improved condition today. Kalitan. King Worth and Luther are all on the schooling list for fractiousness at the post. C. T. Lansdale, who has just returned from Havana, reported today that the Florida East Coast railroad had completed its arrangements for the establishment of a new ocean ferry between Key West aai Havana. This will be ready for service in August and will be of great convenience in the shipping of horses to Oriental Park for the meeting next fall. These new boats will be built to carry passengers as well as horses and freight. William Garth will campaign a string of horses through Canada and will devote much attention, as usual, to the cross-country races. Fred Williams will ride for him. Lewis Garth, his son, has the Edward R. McLean horses in his care and will campaign over the New York tracks. G. M. Odoni was a visitor today from New York. He came over to arrange for stalls at Havre de Grace and will ship there tomorrow eight two-year-olds. Taplin will ride for the stable. He has already reported and has been busy galloping the youngsters. J. T*. Legarson left for Gravesend tonight to look over the string he has there. Sam Ijouis was an arrival from the west. Preparations are already being made at Havana for a great tourist season next winter. E. V. Wilbern, of Polar Rear fame, has formed a company to build a modern hotel at Marianao beach. A frontage on the gulf of 250 feet has already been purchased and work on the building will commence next month. H. D. Brown is promoting a ,000. -000 hotel for Havana. Some of the biggest men in the island are interested in the project and the government is also encouraging it. The site selected is said to be the one occupied by the jail at the foot of the Prado, which has an unobstructed view of the ocean.
