WORK OF DODGE AND FRANKLIN PLEASES. Slipshod Shows a Good Mile — Horses Moving from Louisville to Lexington. Louisville. Ky.. April 20.— J. S. Wards two elig-ibles. Dodge and Franklin, to the Kentucky Derby. surely recorded a good performance in their work over the full Derby route at Douglas Park last Wednesday. While Franklin went the mile and a quarter in 2:12. two -fifths of a second faster than Dodge, the latter was not paced for the trial by jockey F. Murphy, as skillfully us the same rider guided Franklin. While many good judges have all along held an opinion that Franklin would as a three-year-old prove the better of this pair of colts, this opinion is not shared by trainer Ward, who has always been sweet on Dodge, and is still strong in his allegiance to the bay colt. There is no disguising the fact that Dodge has not developed from his two-year-old form as much as Franklin and, as the latter appears to be constantly improving, there is no telling just how good a three-year-old he may turn out to lie. One thing in Dodges favor is that what there is of him is all horse and he is of the type that about get their full growth ln-fore their two-year-old season comes to a close. It was a matter of congratulation to trainer Ward, that Dodge in his last work-out has apparently overcome his slight previous soreness and hath of these two Derby oligibl-s are training for the big race us well as even the most fastidious horsemen could ask for. It is a foregone coneliisiou that, barring training aeei-d-nts. both Franklin and Dodge will carry Wards colors in the Kentucky Derby. They may not lie fortunate enough to capture the valuable prize for their popular Kentucky owner and trainer, but it is safe to say that both of them will give a good account of themselves in the race. There were but few Derby work-outs today and these took place over the Churchill Downs truck. They were: Slipshod -Mile in 1:4.°.-.: fractions, 12%, 25%, 3*%. 51, 1:01%. 1:10%, 1:30%. Judy has disappeared from the stable of his contract employer. John W. S-horr. and the present whereabouts of this light-wcioht rider is not positively known, though the supposition is that he has gone to the Tijuana track. The secretary of that course, as well as the Marybmd tracks, will be notified by the Memphis turfman to not permit the boy to accept mounts. If be does not return to his contract employers stable, his license also will be held up by the Kentucky Lacing Commission. What horses the Schorr stable will send to Lexington to race at the coming meeting, which will not number more than seven or eight head, will Lave here next Monday. Ellison, the three-year-old in the Schorr stable, which was not entered in the Kentucky Derby, but is among the entries in the Latonia Derby, is now training well and his owner expects him to pay his way this year. This colt trained quite sore last year after winning the Hashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs, and to this is attributed his indifferent iierformauces later on last year. So far this spring he has shown no sign of this ailment and is at present well advanced in his training. Trainer It. J. Williams will send ten of his siring of eighteen horses, which are quartered at Douglas Bark, to the coming Lexington meeting and these horses will go there next Monday along with eleven head that trainer W. II. Baker will take there to race. The Williams Bros, have eighteen fine yearlings at their western breeding ranch. They are all the get of their good sires Martinet and Hilurious, the litter, son of Voter, having out seven two-year-oid winners last seas«H. Nine of this collection of yearlings are colts. These turfmen are firm in the belief that Hilarious will ultimately make a great sire for them. All of his get trained have much apses] and a majority have proven winners. In their opinion the yearlings they own by him this year are the best crop of youngsters they have ever possessed. Trainer James, who has Joe Bosenfield in his stable at Douglas Park, has begun working Just Bed again. This horse was fired and turned out last year.
