SQUEELEltS TURN TO WIN DEFEATS FEKM0USE AND NIGHTSTICK IN THE CHESTER SELLING STAKES IN GOOD TIME. Sun King Takes the Steeplechase, in Which Three Horces Fall — Marianao Wins at a Long Price and is Bid Up. Baltimore. Md.. April 20.— The Chester Selling Stakes for three-year-olds and over at three-quarters, was offered as the principal feature of todays card at Havre de Grace. A field of four took part in the race, with Feninouse most fancied. The winner turned up in B. McHrides sisedy gilding Squeeler. Off to a good start, larrington rushed Squeeler into the lead and, setting a fast puce throughout, held a safe margin over Fonmoiise to the finish. Fonmoiise came with a rush in the stretch and disposed of Nightstick for second place. Bangton 075 1:13% Apart from the running of the stake a steeplechase over the two-mile course was also offered as a feature. The winner turned up in A. I. Parrs Sun King, which scored in an easy manner over Lady Butterfly and F. A. Stone. Three of the starters failed to finish, going down at the fifth fence. Carl was first to fall and New Haven and Colden Vale fell over him. Fortunately neither horses nor riders were hurt. The biggest field of the day took part in the opening dash. Marjorie A. unseated her rider shortly after the start and ran away three miles before she was captured by the aid of an exercise pony. This race went to J. O. Talliotts Mariana... which rewarded his few backers by a substantial return in the nmtuels. After the victory of Mari-anao he was bid up 00 over his entered price of S700 and was protected by the usual advance. Phil Ingar, winner of the third race, was also a target. Ixdng advanced 05 over his entered price of ,300. He. too, was bought in. J. O. Talbott scored his second success of the day when Monocacy accounted for the fifth race-in a driving finish with Humiliation. Jockey larrington led the riders during the course of the afternoon by piloting three of his mounts to victory. These were Phil Lngar, Squeeler and Monocacy. Jockey E. Haynes. who is showing good form in the saddle here, may go to Canada as a contract rider for the Thorncliffe Stable, in charge of Henry McDaniel. Among todays arrivals were Thomas P. Phelan of Toronto and II. Giddings. Sr.. of Oakville, Ont. Mr. Giddings expects to see Hearts of Oak race through the field at this meeting. The steeplechasers that will carry the silks of Joseph B. Widener this year have reacted Pimlico and, as formerly, are in the care of J. Howard Lewis. There are several that have been brought over from France to race for Widener this year. Steve Judge will ship the horses of B. O. Kgan to the Tijuana track in Southern California at the .lose of the Iimlico meeting. In the string he has King Worth, Water Lily. Ada Anne and others. Reports come from Tijuana that the opening was particularly successful. O. It. Tompkins has received word from Canada that a dead foal was born to Phmover, the mare that was mated with Broomstick by P. P. Cowan in the hope of obtaining ■ Quebec Kings Plate winner. Ilanover was winner of the Quebec Kings Plate herself. Jockey E. Ambrose has gone to New York, in the hope of having his sssspeasstea, inflicted at Bowie, lifted by the stewards. A. B. Loudon, of the Hamilton Jockey Club. was a visitor at Havre de Grace this afternoon with J. W. Mclntyre in the interest of the coming meetings at Hamilton. He said the soldiers were still camping on the Hamilton race course and that he had ta have permission to go through the lines. He expects that they will be transferred elsewhere lx-fore long and also said that within a short time the mutuel machines would be installed. Frank J. Coleman, owner of Tactics and Jrcct-ings was an arrival from Detroit.
