DODGE OUTSTAYS MILESTONE QUALIFIES FOR THE KENTUCKY DEKBY BUT HAS TO BE BIDDEN HARD. Lexingtons Second Day Marked by a Big Attendance — Satin Wins Like a Good One — Colonel Yennie Out of the Derby. Lexington. Ky.. April 28. — The absence of moisture mid a rising temperature served to asist in bringing out another bumper attendaiiee at the Kentucky Association course this afternoon. The track was in bad condition and it required a sturdily built racer to race over it with any degree of facility. The Beaumont purse of 00. over the mile and seventy yards route, was the best offering and produced a fairly satisfactory contest, the long end of the purse going to Dodge, un overwhelming choice which had to fight it out hard for a time with Milestone to win by over a length. Milestone landed 20 lengths before Big Fellow with Jack ODowd and Polroma, the other starters trailing. The five are Kentucky Derby eligibles. but they will have to display performances superior to that of this afternoon to be regarded as serious factors in the big Louisville event on May 13. Former Senator J. X. Camden showed up what may be a rattling filly in Satin, a slashing daughter of Peter Quince and Nuns Cloth. McTaggart got her away from the barrier with a rush and avoided getting caught in a jam on the first turn, then she drew out in the stretch to win eased up. The oiiener was productive of a surprise when Edna Kenna won handily over Wanda Pitzer and Carrie Onne. The banner attendance that has marked the first two days of the meeting under anything but propitious conditions, lias caused the management to realize that the sport has outgrown the plant and the directors are already devising means to enlarge it to meet the requirements. The betting enclosure, liarticularly, is entirely inadequate and is responsible for much congestion. R. L. Bakers Father Riley accounted for the third race, in which some fairly good ones ran, Billy Joe landing in second place. Another surprise attended the running of the sixth race, when Port Light won with great ease over Ben Quince and White Crown. Fleuro was thought, to be a "good thing," but Kederis rode him ineffectively. Jockey T. McTaggart came over from Louisville during the afternoon, especially to pilot Satin in the two-year-old filly race, and contributed largely towards her victory. He stated that he was unaware what horse would represent H. P. Whitney in the Kentucky Derby, but he felt certain it would not be Slipshod, which has not been training up to Albert Simons exi eetntions. John Sanfords crack, Oeorge Smith, was given a mile work-out during the atternoou and went the distance in 1:51%. His appearance on the track excited much interest. Jefferson Livingston stated today that Colonel Vennie would i»ositively not be a starter in the Kentucky Derby, as he has been temporarily retired from training on account of a slight skin disease. J. C. Milam had a good day. winning a double witli his own Iort Light and Norumbega. and saddling Satin, which hi- trains for .1. N. Camden. Norumt cga he acquired while in New Orleans when the Gilford A. Cochran sale took place. The filly showed a right smart |»erformaiice for her first out here and stood a hard drive to overhaul Midway. Archie Zimnicr is an arrival from New York in quest of several useful racers to add to his establishment. lrlnce Harry, which has been in temporary retirement on account of a slight foot ailment, will be put into training again within the next few days. Edward Corrigan was among todays arrivals. Jockey J. Acton drew a five clays suspension yesterday for rough riding while astride Moinen Star in the fifth race. The following work-outs took place this morning over a heavy track and around the "dogs:" Aldebaran — Half mile in 54. Bedtime Stories — Three -eighths in 41. Charmeuse — Five-eighths in 1:08%. Cosmic — Quarter mile in 20. Dr. Carmen — Three -quarters in 1:23. Flitaway -Mile in 1 :53. Hocnir --Five-eighths in 1:12%. Impression Five-eighths in 1:09. Mnl;; bar — Three -eighths in 40. Margaret .V— Five-eighths in 1:07%. One Step--Three-quarters in 1:24. Sosius — Half mile in 54. iurco — Three-eighths in 43. U Steppa — Five-eighths in 1:15. Worlds Wonder— Mile in 1:53%. Zoroaster — Three-quarters in 1:27.
