CLOSE FINISHES AT CONNAUGHT PARK. Sleepy Sam Wins for Owner Pons — Collector Captures the Steeplechase — Kama All the Way. Ottawa. Out.. June 21. — Surprises were again the order at Connaught Park this afternoon. Secretary BherMaa Clark offered a well arranged program in which small fields went to the post. A majority of the finishes found the winners aaaav hard drives to win by small margins. There was a ilecidrd improvt inent in track conditions and with it cam" an improvement in MM racing. The Pons Stable won its first race of the meeting when Sleepy Sam came from behind in the opener, to get up in the fin;,i strides and beat Bright Sand by a scant length. It was a clos- thing lietween Minda and Ethan Allen in the second. The latter opened a long lead in the early riinning but tired badlv in the boniest ret. h ami Minebr just managed to get up to beat him out by a nose. Speculation iii the steeplechase was divided between Emerald Gets and New Haven. The latter managed to stagge-r in a half length in advance of Cynosure for second place, while Emerald Oem was beaten off. The winner turned up in Collector, which won in a canter. The Canadian-bred Kama beat some fair hors-s in the sprint handicap, in which he made all of the pace. Dishmon made his first appearance in the saddle on Sleepy Sam since his illness at Montreal. William garth referred word this morning that his son. Lewis Garth, had arranged for the shipment of the Edward K. .McLean steeplei hasers from Pilnlico to Saratoga Jam- 28. The Thomas Clyde horses that have been at Pimlico since the close of the meeting there will leave for Saratoga in the same shipment. Anderson will be able to accept mounts before the Fort Erie meeting While no bones were broken. Anderson suffered borne painful bruises in his recent mishap. He is still in the Protestant hospital in Ottawa.
