AQUEDUCT CROWDED WITH SPECTATORS. Trial by Jury the Surprising Winner of tho Carter Handicap Bonnie Witch a Fast Filly. New York, July 1. At the lowest calculation 12,000 racing enthusiasts saw Capt. H. 15. Cas-satts Trial by Jury win the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct under the most auspicious weather conditions. Like all of W. S. Vosburghs handicaps, the race was an open one from a speculative standpoint, almost every horse in the running having supporters from some quarter. The race was such a scramble that several horses held the lead at different points. This was the case until Hearing the end, when Trial by Jury singled out followed by Ormes-dale. Not until the last sixty yards did Short Grass loom up. lie had been far back all the way to the stretch turn being easily fifteen lengths out of the running at one time. How fast he ran the last three-eighths can only be guessed. He was about six lengths behind tho leaders at the sixteenth post then like a whirlwind came and gaining with every stride. Hut the race was over a trifle too soon for him and he could not overtake Trial by Jury and Ormesdnlc. The Kentucky Derby winner George Smith was never a serious contender. Harry Payne Whitney started a good two-year-old in the Clover stakes in the filly Honnie Witch, which had raced impressively with the colts in the Groat American Stakes last Saturday. She was installed favorite and fully justified that distinction by winning in a common canter over Yankee Witch and Kittenish. The Cochran entry Genesis and Queen of the Water failed to run to a place. In winning Honnie Witch equalled the track record of it!. Her victory caused favorable comment from horsemen, as it was accomplished with consummate ease. Twenty-one royally bred yearlings selected from the best breeding establishments in France will be offered for sale in this country shortly. They are coming on the Mongolian, which will arrive here July S. They are in charge of Adelbert Keiff, a brother of Lester and John Reiff. Adelbert Keiff has been a successful trainer in England, France and Italy. This is the first shipment of the kind to this country, as the yearlings have been especially selected from among the best in France. Mr. Keiff will also bring ten belonging to Mr. T. P. Thome, who will race them in this country. Fred Hurlew is expected to sail on the same ship and will probably bring with him all the yearlings belonging to Clarance II. Mackay. Sol Lichonstein was at the track today and is rapidly recovering his eyesight. He says he will be completely cured in a few days. After True as Steel had won the first race he was advanced from 00 to ,100 by G. A. Alexandra and was retained. The AVickliffe stable horses in charge of trainer W. C. Clancy will be shipped to Saratoga July 12. This stable consists of seventeen two-year-olds, Ghetto Girl having been sent to the farm in Kentucky. Price McKinney was an arrival today and will remain for several days. There was a touch of the patriotic in the victory of Trial by Jury carrying the red white and blue of Capt. Cassatt. Often in the old days at Monmouth Park where A. J. Cassatt, the father of the captain, was a power. Rica. The Hard, Taragon and other good horses trained by John Huggius were wont to win on Independence day. Short Grass was separately limed in 1:2-1 in the Carter Handicap. He ran the last seven-eighths of the Queens County Handicap on Saturday last in 1:215. This horse was considered a seven-eighths horse when racing in England and owner Herz bought him at Epsom after he had won over that route. Kilkenny Hoy made it four straight wins today but James Kutler was forced to stand a 00 advance to keep him. J. W. Hedrick and G. A. Alexandra were the bidders, the latter making the last bid of ,000. Sandman II., Sir William Johnson and Ill 1 1 u x are credited with especially good work at Jamaica recently.
