AWAY IN GOOD STYLE AT FORT ERIE. Fourth of July Stakes Only Contested "by Three Horses, hut a Nose Finish Results. Fort Erie, Out., July 4. Fourth of July racegoers turned out in large numbers at Fort Erie this afternoon. The Niagara Racing Association furnished a splendid program for its opening day, the feature of which was the Fourth of July Stakes, a handicap at one mile and seventy yards. On account of the drying out track, scratches were numerous in this event and, of the eleven carded, only three went to the post. The race furnished an exciting contest, the finish resolving itself into a furious drive between Runes and Leo Skolny, in which the former just managed to win by a nose. The Thorncliffe Stable furnished two of the winners in Hritanuia and Incog. Koth won their races, in easy fashion. Incog beat some of the best youngsters on the circuit when she won the third race. Fan G., a recent arrival from Kentucky, was second. Capt. AV. F. Presgravc has divided the stable he raced at Hamilton. He sent half of them, including Highway and Kerthier, back to the Hlue Rennets track at Montreal, while T. J. Kird took the remainder to Windsor. Mrs. L. A. Livingston also shipped her stable to- Windsor and J. H. Seagram will send his stable there in a few days. Previous to the races this afternoon, the Canadian Racing Associations committee held a meeting in the clubhouse. Applications for licenses from jockeys and trainers were passed on, the following being granted: Jockeys R. Watts, J. Callahan, J. F. Clark, M. Fallon, O. Gentry and F. Merimee. Trainers J. H. Respess, F. Teahan, J. B. Adkins, J. Krown, AV. T. Martin, Fred Foster, F. Wright and J. Shaffer. A. L. Kirby wired President Madigin that, on account of the illness of a couple of his horses, he would be unable to ship his stable from Kentucky at present. He hopes to be able to be at Fort" Erie with his horses for the next meeting. Mortimer Mahoney was a visitor. He came up from Atlantic-Highlands, and, at the conclusion of the meeting, will go to Arindsor. Mr. Mahoney reports many improvements are to be made to the plant at Howie. He says that Messrs. Kryan and OHara contemplate making this course second to none in Maryland. The Pennsylvania railroad is building a spur into the grounds, directly in the rear of the grandstand. Secretary A. R. Loudon of the Hamilton Jockey Club was busy during the afternoon distributing condition books for his next meeting among the horsemen. The book is an attractive one and all of the prominent stables have asked for stalls. Hen Quince changed hands after he won the sixth race. He was advanced from ,000 to ,000 and bought by Sam Louis. Fred Foster arrived from New York yesterday with Halgee and Glomer. He sent a half dozen horses to Chicago and will ship the two he has here at the conclusion of the Fort Erie meeting. James Gass will ship the G. AV. J. Hissell horses from here to Saratoga at the conclusion of the meeting to be freshened. Gass plans to return to Lexiugton in the fall to take up nine yearlings owned by Mr. Hissell. Three of them are by Rapid Water, which is now the propertj of Mr. Hissell. The latter contemplates racing in Cuba again next winter. Francis J. Pons has received word from Tennessee that the weanling eolt by Judge AVright Tallahassee ran into a tree and broke his neck. A filly by Judge AVright Clothes Brush died ten days after she was foaled. Mr. Pons has only three foals at his place this year. lie has decided to sell eleven yearlings through the Powers-Hunter company at Saratoga in the latter part of August. One of them is by Judge AVright and the others by the young Sain stallion Toney Bonero. The Pons two-year-olds have won from one to four races each this year.
