LOCAL RACING A SUCCESS MONDAYS ATTENDANCE ABOUT UP TO THE STANDARD OF OLD-TIME HAWTHORNE. Leo Skolny Takes tlio Handicap and Is the First Double Winner of tho Meeting Two Horses Fall in tho First Race. Whatever elembt existeel :is to tho sucrose of tho rae-ing hen; ami :is to tin? thoroughness of the- revival, was effectively dispelleel by the uttenelaiu-e of :i surprisingly large- gathiiing and the-ir keen interest in tin sport :is well :is fo the adaptability to tin? oral and cre-elit system of wage-ring. Tho confusion of Saturday was missing. Of course-, in comparison with Saturdays attendance, yesterdays patronage appeared decidedly small. Iml as .Monday at tendance goes nt tracks, there was little to choose rroni that of yesterday compared with that of Hawthorne, when the famous Ceurigaii e-oiirse jove-el its he-v lav. The mastery of the he-Ming system was distinct and layer and player went about their business in silent and satisfactory style. There was no cessation of vigilance on the part of tho linkertoii people and the sheriffs forces to prevent violations, but nnlr two arrests were the sum total for the afternoon. To a close observer it appeared as if vesterdav marked the critical point, and that the revival stood the acid test. From now on tho racing will probably improve steadily. There was no provision for features on tin? card, the Cicero Handicap at three-piarters serving the purpose of a headline!-. The starters in the six races, however, were of even calibre and they furnished close and wholesome contests, many of the finishes being of tlio driving variety, with plenty of action in Hie earlier running. 11. .1. .Mackenzies crack l.eo Skolny. at present in his top form, accounted for tin handicap in Miini-what easy style at the end. but during the earlier racing lie had to he ridden hard to keep a forward place with his more lightly weighted rivals. When Byrne got ready, however, which was just after rounding into lie stretch, he drew away iiickly enough and had the speed in. reserve to outstay Bonanza and Hlackie law. Incident. ill v tlw victory gave I Skolny the distinction or beting the first double winner at the meeting, having won in a race last Silnnlay. A bad mix-up immediately after a perfect send off in the opening dash, l-ought with it the first fall of the meeting and. for a period, threatened to be attended with harmful results, but fortunately nothing more serious then a shakenp for jockeys . Hunt and W. lloag occurred. The incident came soon after the start, anil was due to crowding, causing Morristown and Mo." to go down. It also was responsible for some of the others being impeded in an effort to avoid the fallen horses. Black Beauly. Shrewsbury and Type were the lucky ones, and it afforded them such :t gooel opportunity that, they had the finish between them. Type winning easily with Ulack .Beauty lasting well to outstay Shrewsbury. The Williams Brothers had designs on three of the afternoons races, but Meirristeiwns mishap eliminated one. Jocular and High Horse, however, raced to expectations for the stable and won easily in the respective races they started in. .locular was in with a fair baud of youngsters and had all the racing luck, while Amazonian was :t sufferer Irom the "cowboy" tactics that prevailed in spots during the race. High Horse ran as if best of those he met and his success was accomplished easily. allaher Bros, began their Chicago campaign auspiciously, when Amulet was returned winner in the third race. It marked the first race that tin! gelding had won since the Douglas Park meeting a year ago. Hoy landed in second place and Louise Paul third. The closing race went to Star of T-ove, which moved away from the others in the stretch after having been restrained to tin last quarter. Injury, finishing with a good burst of speed after having raced distantly, got up in time for second place, with Impression lasting for third. Howdy Howdy, the favorite, ran one of his bad races "and was never prominent after the start. Selling race activities broke out in virulent fashion during the afternoon and three of the winners were advanced over their entered price. The first run-up came in the third race when Amulet was bid up to 05, an advance of 00. High Horse was the next winner to receive at lent inn. He was also in for 00, but was raised to 05 and retained. W. C. Wcnnt, was tin; bidder on both occasions. In the closing race. Star of Love was in for 00 and .1. Shilling bid him to ,205 but failed to get him. The run-up money amounting to ,505 for the day, will revert back to. the horsemen on Wednesday next, when it will be added to the regularly announced purses. The 05 run-up of M. Bert Thurnian Saturday will be added in 00 amounts to the third, fifth and sixth races today. This is in conformity with tin- rule promulgated by Martin Xuthansoii that all run-up moneys in full revert back to the horsemen. At other tracks the owners of tin? s ond horse, in case of a run-up would be the beni-ficiary to a good sum. Much surprise was manifested that jockey Am-inann, a totally inexperienced rider, should be astride Alineda Lawrence, a seemingly strong contender in the fifth race. He lost his stirrup after going a half mile and but for this mishap would have been more dangerous. Among the arrivals from Kentucky yesterday with their horses were T. 1. Hayes ami John AVhitlou. They came from Latoni.i. Hayes brought seven horses and Whitlow six. Those; in Hayes string are Buford, Kinney. El Key, Jack ODowd. Solid Bock, Auriga and Floral lark. Whitlows stable is comprised of Westy Hogan, the champion two-year-old at Xe-w Orleans last winter, Al M. Dick, Cardonie. Lucky K.. Sun Maid and Joe 1. Jockeys H. lhillips and J Williams were among the days arrivals. Williams will do the riding for the T. 1. Hayes stable. Will Street, a two-year-old, owned by II. G. lledweli, and which was entered in the second race yesterday, crashed through a fence while being galloped in the morning. He sustained numerous cuts and as a result had to be scratched. Kogcr Sullivan, who acts in the capacity of bookkeeper at the Juarez and Lexington, Ky., race tracks and as a calculator in the pari-mutuel department at the other Kentucky tracks, came over from Latoniu this morning. He will serve as bookkeeper for the remainder of the Hawthorne meeting.
