SMALL FIELDS IN EMPIRE CITY RACING. I Port Light Defeats Gnat Fenmouse Wins from Bayberry Candlo in Close Finish. Xew York. July 17. Smaller fields were the rule at Empire city today and several of the favorites were quoted at almost prohibitive odds. The feature race, the Woodlawn Handicap at oik; mile, was framed for fillies and mares three; years " old and over, and only three went to the post. The defeat of Gnat in the third race was a surprise. The Butler filly ruled an odds-ou choice and could never got on equal terms with Port Light, J. W. Schorrs handy plater, essaying his first start in the east. Port Light led from start to finish and. after his victory, was advanced from ,500 to ,300 by Benjamin Davis and sold to him at that figure. Davis hitherto had been identified with operations on the lawn. Malachite made good in the second race over Miss Puzzle and Sprint. It was the first success for the Belmont colors at the meeting. The Woodlawn Handicap proved to be one of Hie best races of the meeting. The game and consistent Bayberry Candle met defeat by Fenmouse by the narrowest of margins. Plcioiio showed the way for the first quarter, then Bayberry Caudle took the lead. I.oftus eased her up a trillo and Fenmouse. making a speedy move, was soon on equal terms with the May racer. In turning for home Fenmouse got to the front and appeared likelv to be the easiest sort of a winner, but Bavlierrv Candle came again on the outside when she ap"-peared to be hopelessly beaten, and so fast was her rush that Fenmouse only beat her by a nose and Bayberry Candle would have In en the victor in another nod. Loft us rode the mare according to orders, he being instructed to go the front if possible, but the difference in weight told. Tin; third race was at about three-quarters, it being the first race at the; present meeting to be inn over the abbreviated course, those previous to today having been over the full three-quarters route. It is reported that .1. W. lledrick has sold Sam Mc.Mockiii to the Marroue stable, lledrick claimed the horse last Wednesday out of a sidling race. II. Fink bid up Certrude Marie, winner of the first race, from 1916.sh00 to ,200, but trainer George Odom protected her for the Brighton Stable. Carlton G. which was cut down in his winning race of Saturday, was not injured as badlv as was at first thought. Trainer Murphy cauterized the wound and the idd horse again is doing well.
