Tumbler carried the AVhitney jdlks in this race anil he showed himself to be a good colt by the easy fashion in which he galloped in advance of the others, with Notter casing him up in the last eighth. Tom McTaggart. showed a good performance in figurine as the runner-up. but the Western crack, Frigerio, made a poor showing and was hopelessly out of contention after the first eighth. G. K. Tompkins uncovered a good thing in the maiden steeplechase in Watertown. which won oasily from Agon, with Chivalry outstaying the badly tiring Guardian Saint. The latter showed :i high flight of early speed and fenced in good fashion, but tired after going the first round of the field. The followers of favorites had a big inning after the opening race, most of the first choices scoring. Eight Kuglish yearlings bought for Jefferson Livingstons account are due here next Thursday on the steamer Manchuria and will be transferred to Louisville, where Louis Tauber will take charge of them. He stated the horse came out of the race in good condition and would be shipped here shortly. Jockey John McTaggart cancelled his riding engagements for tin; afternoon in order to be with his wife, who had to be hurried to a local hospital last night to undergo an operation for appendicitis. She was reported to have stood the operation well and to be resting comfortably. Frank Shannon was an arrival this morning from Chicago and II. C Keeker motored here from St. Louis. Dervish, which was claimed by J. O. Talbot t after his victory last Friday, has been bought back by J. M. Henry Jr. at a slight advance over the claiming price.
