FORT ERIE PROSPERING CAPITAL MONDAY ATTENDANCE VIEWS SOME EXCELLENT CONTESTS. Eels an Easy Victor in the Days Chief Race and Gains a Now Owner Arriet Defeats Top o th Morning Track Talk. Fort Erie. Out.. August 7. J. T. Shannons Fel3 accounted for todays feature race here, a selling handicap at one mile and seventy yards, which he won in easy fashion after leading from start to finish. Fels showed a keen turn of speed from the start and at no time during the running did the outcome appear in doubt. Black Broom made a game effort in the homestretch and got up in time to beat Christie a head for second place. Fels changed hands after his victory, Paul Powers claiming him for ,050. An allowance race at three-quarters, which brought out a speedy field of sprinters, divided interest with the running of the handicap. It rurnished a stirring contest, in which Arriet beat Top o th Morning a head. The latter was gaining on the leader and gradually wearing her down. Seven claims were put in for Corn Broom and six for Joe Finn after they won. C. A. Crew secured Corn Broom for while F. J. Pons secured Joe Finn for ,050. G. Alexandra, AA Alexandra and J. G. Bussey had claims in for both horses. Sam Louis, Harry Giddings and G. K. Chancellor also filed claims for Corn Broom, while II. G. P.edwell and AV. Fenwick made claims for Joe Finn. Amos Turney was an arrival from Kentucky and R. K. AVatkins came from Saratoga. Mr. AVatkins expressed the opinion that Boots is the best horse that, has raced in Canada in many years. Knots came out of his race on Saturday in splendid condition and showed no ill effects for his record breaking performance. His owner, Oscar Lewisohn. visited the stable after the race in company with his trainer, John AVhalen. and expressed great pleasure over Boots splendid showing. It is quite evident that neither Mr. Lewisohn nor trainer AVhalen fear anybodys horse. Boots will be entered in some of the important stakes to be run during the fall meetings in Maryland and if he retains his present form it is a sure thing that he will win his share of them. Trainer AVhalen won the Dominion Handicap a few years back with Mr. August Belmonts Flint Rock. He leaves for Saratoga with his horses on Thursday. AV. C. AVeant found it necessary to destroy his useful plater. Zoroaster. The horse developed a case of lockjaw at Hawthorne and failed to respond to treatment. Zoroaster was a useful horse last winter at Havana, where he won a number of races. It develops that when Linbrook fell on the turn into tin; backstretch in her race of Saturday she broke her leg at the ankle. Trainer Healy hopes to save her for a broodmare. The leg has been put into a pLister cast. Jockey K. Taplin. who has severed his connection with the Brighton Stable, will probably join forces with his former employer, II. G. Bed-well. Taplin and Kedwell always proved a lucky combination. The latter is making an effort to have Taplin join him at Fort. Krie. His plans are to ship from here to Windsor and at the conclusion of that meeting to go to Havre de Grace. George Garner, a colored rubber in the employ of A. II. Aivell, dropped dead yesterday while rolling a bandage. His home was near Lexington, Ky.. where his body will lie shipped for interment. James Arthur wishes to deny the story sent out from Toronto that he had released the apprentice jockey M. Mountain. Mr. Arthur permitted" the boy to go to Dufferin Park, with the understanding that he would report back to the stable when notified. The stakes to be run at Havre de Grace closed today. Those to be run at AVoodbine, Toronto anil Blue" Bonnets, Montreal, will close tomorrow. Joseph McLennan is looking after the interests of both associations here. Kd AVhyte returned from Saratoga unsuccessful in his mission, which was to purchase some yearlings. He found the two-year-old Thoughtful in such bad condition, on his return, that he immediately decided to throw him out of training for the remainder of the year. Thoughtful was badly cut down in his race of Saturday, when he was jumped on on the stretch turn. The officials of the Jockey Club have been requested to notify owners in the east against harboring the apprentice J. Campbell, who left, the employ of II. G. Kedwell. The lad is supposed to be at Saratoga. Arrangements have been made by the Maryland State Fair Association to take horses off the cars that ship to Baltimore for the meeting to be held at Timonium September 5 to September 9. Boh Potee is soliciting horses for the meeting. He goes from here to Saratoga on Thursday. Harry Rites, who is racing a stable at Fort Erie, was notified by the Racing Commission of Baltimore County, of his appointment as presiding steward for the meeting.
