NEARING THE CLOSE AT FORT ERIE. Jane Straith Runs a Fast Raec and Proves Herself a Good Filly Track Gossip. Fort Erie. Out., August 11. The consistent Jane Straith accounted for today.s feature race at Fort Erie, a selling handieapat one mile and a sixteenth, which she won with ease from McAdoo. Jane Straith made a fast pace, held the race safe always and was tinder restraint at the finish. Slie ran the first half in 17, and the mile in 1:38. It was by far the best race of her career. Well-matched fields went to tin; post in a majority of the races and the contests were keen. After the running of the fifth race, smart showers fell, which made the going a bit sloppv. Jockey J. Callahan was taken sick during the afternoon and was forced to cancel his engagements after the second race. While the horses were going to the post for the tliird race. Avolonte was kicked a couple of times by Sansyniing and was bleeding from a couple of gashes in his chest when he pulled up. Throe claims were lodged for Jane Straith after she won and G. L. Strang secured her in the drawing for ,550. Edward Trotter and W. Perkins were the other claimants. W. Stormont took the mare from Perkins at Hamilton for .,100 and since then has won five races with her. R. L. Baker took McAdoo out of the same race. He lost the horse a few days ago by the claiming process. Hops, which was claimed by Sam Louis from R. L. Baker yesterday, has been turned over to E. Kathman to train. S. N. Hobnail was a visitor at Fort Erie this afternoon. Mr. Ilolinan announced that he would give a meeting at his new track opposite Montreal, beginning August 20. This latest addition to the race courses in Montreal will be known as the Kempton Park Racing Association. There are two tracks, one a half mile and another a mile, the smaller one being built inside of the latter. It is said to be a good plant and that everything will be in readiness for the opening. Edward Whyte has shipped the Marta Santa two-year-old Thoughtful back to the Valley Farm near Hamilton to remain until next spring. Thoughtful was cut down in his only start here and he was too good a colt to take chances with. Jockey H. Woods, who was recently restored to good standing by the Jockey Club in New York, was an arrival this morning. He will begin riding on the Canadian circuit at Windsor. Jockey 1". Lowder has been suspended by Albert Simons for an infraction of stable rules. The apprentice Soherrer was suspended for the remainder or the meeting for rough riding in the seventh raw; yesterday. . -Scherrer had tin; motfht on Anna Brazel and was held accountable for the interference from which Booker Bill suffered. W. M. Carter has purchased the half interest that W. B. Dalley held in the horse Earlv Sighr. Jockey Obert announced that he would take a vacation for a couple of weeks and that he would not be seen in the saddle again before the Ottawa meeting. Obert suffered a bad fall at Hamilton and has not yet entirely recovered from its effects. Joseph McLennan received a telegram from Secretary Ross that the track at Connaught Park was in splendid order and that it was being worked every day in prcpartiou for the arrival of a number of horses from Fort Erie. Sixteen claims were lodged for Royal Interest after he won the sixth race and in the drawing W. Smith secured the horse.
