GOOD ENTRIES IN ENGLISH STAKES. The entries for the Derby and Oaks of 1918 must be deemed quite satisfactory, there being two hundred and eighty-seven subscribers to the one and two hundred and five to the other race, with his majesty responsible for five in each, and all the most influential patrons of the turf, including the three stewards of the Jockey Club, are contributors. American owners are not as well represented as usual, and one misses in particular the name of Mr. A. Belmont, who was for some years associated with the Palace House Stable, and had pleasant experiences of classic racing when Norman III. won the Two Thousand and Tracery, a far greater horse than he, triumphed in the St. Leger. This fine young stallion remains at Mr. L. de Rothschilds Southcotirt Stud. Lady- James Douglas is the most conspicuous nominator for the DerUy with ten, one more than Mr. Hultou. who, it is said, intends to dispose of his yearlings in the autumn. Lord Anglessy conies in with four. Major Astor with a similar number. Lord Carnarvon has entered five. Lord Derby five, and Lord Falmouth and Mr. Fairie three each. Mr. A. James nominates four. Sir R. Jardine three, the brothers Joel four each. Lord Lonsdale five, Lord Rosebery four, Rarou Kd-ouard and Mr. J. de Rothschild four each, and Mr. Leopold three. Mr. Mortimer Singer four. Sir W. Tatem four, the Duke of Westminster three, Mr. Fair Korksop Stud six. Sir Mark Sykes Sled-mere six, and Mr. Whitworth seven, but search is made in vain for the name of the Duke of Portland in cither race. All the stakes recently closed for Newmarket meetings hare done fairly, with thirty-three entries for the St. Ives Handicap, thirty-seven for the Two Middle Miles Handicap, forty-five for the Reilmere Nursery, thirty-eight for the Chesterton Nursery, forty for the Culford Three-Year-Ohl Handicap, forty-one for the Rarton Mills Nursery, forty-two for the Lakonhani Handicap, twenty-five for the P.ury St, Edmunds Handicap, twenty-four inclusive of Diadem, the Swynford Marchetta filly. Knutsford, Grand Fleet and Sunset Glow for the York Two-Year-Old Stakes substitute for the Gimcraek, and twenty-nine for the Fakenham Nursery, all of which races figure in the program for the Third Extra meeting.
