The Grand Union Hotel Stakes of ,500, for two-year-olds, headed the feature races, with the Merchants and Citizens Handicap, for older horses, also holding extensive interest, while the Saratoga Steeplechase Handicap was not far behind in engaging attention. Hourless and Tom McTaggart carried 125 pounds and set or forced the pace all the way and the I.elmout colt drew out decisively in the .stretch. Omar Khayyam was regarded with high esteem for the race, but his performance was disappointing. Prolonged applause from the clubhouse, grandstand and lawn greeted Star Master on his return to the judges stand after he had led home his opponents in the sixth race. The demonstration lasted for some time and was a genuine tribute to the sportsmanship of A. K. Macomber, who lias patiently awaited the deferred victory of his extensive stable. Most of the Kentucky breeders departed tonight for Lexington. Tliey included Hal Price Headley, J. C. Milam. J. C. Callaher, J. S. P.arbee, J. 1. Carr. Capt. F. J. Clay, Thomas Piatt, Sewell A. Rumors of a big pending deal in thoroughbreds were rife this morning concerning the transfer of Dodge, Franklin, Sedan and Iterlin from the J. S. Ward stable to a prominent newspaper publisher. Tiie prospective purchaser, in company with William anil Lewis W. Garth, looked the horses over this morning at the Ward stable, but the latter announced this afternoon that nothing further had teen done in the matter for the present.
