CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. Starter James Milton has arrived at Montreal prepared to take up the duties of starter at the Kemp-ton Course Thoroiighln-ed Racing Associations new track at Laprairie. K. M. Welds Weldship scored his third straight - victory of the Saratoga meeting when he captured the Beverwyck Steeplechase. This was his second 1 straight victory in that stake and marked an unbroken . run of victories at the Spa covering a period of two years. Quintin lreece. Godfrey Vreeces young son, who gave such a brilliant exhibition of gameness in riding Etruscan into second place at the Belmont - Vark spring meeting with a broken leg, has regained his riding form. He lias been galloping horses three weeks. Jockey E. Vool was in San Francisco for a few-days last week. He expects to resume riding at the : Ueno meeting. September 19. Since Vool is now : twenty-two years of age and can easily do 105 pounds, it seems probable that he has many years of saddle service before him. A. J. Joyner is at Belmont Vark with his horses. At Saratoga he turned orer the horses belonging to the Schwartz Brothers to W. II. Karrick. but he still has the Oakridge Thomas F. Ryans horses, as well as those of George I. Widener, Jr., so that he has a powerful stable in his charge. . Trainer Joyner says the Saratoga meeting was in i all respects a brilliant success. The racing was ; good, and the . attendance unprecedentedly large. The time-test seems to be of more interest than usual at present. Everyone is aware that downhill tracks like Epsom and Brighton make for fast time, but apart from the mile record being held by Caiman, which covered the mile at Lingfield in 1:334, it may be well to point out that the next best time orer the distance was that of the Irish-bred horse, Cigar, which won over a mile at Derby in 1:34, this being only one and two-fifths seconds slower than Caimans record. London Sporting Life. A disp tch of yesterday from London says: "Dublin correspondents report th ;t Richard Croker, f.tinrrly leader of Tammany hall, is retiring from tic- tnrf temporarily and is going to the United ..tat--- mint of the condition of his eyes, vi i ; , Hire expert i Mention. Mr. Croker is sell- . iu his horses in training, but is retaining his -i aa.i b-.iodm.ires. Mr. Croker won his latest . .t e on Sat .i l.v when Banshee, st.rting at 20 to 1, captured the Phoenix Plate, worth .,500. Itoth Mr. Croker and his wife backed Banshee, which he bought recently for S2.500.
