AN OFF DAY AT BELMONT 3LUE THISTLE CAPTURES THE NASSAU STAKES AND HARRY SHAW RUNS LAST. Paddy Whack Provides a Surprise Special Race for Saturday to Enable Stromboli and Roaincr to Try Conclusions Once More. I Now York. September 5. After two days of brilliant racing at Melmont Park, todays eanl .seemed dull in comparison, although tlie racing was keenly contested. A handicap and a selling stake; race had places on the program, both of which brought out so:ne fair performers. Minis Thistle proved best in the Nassau Stakes in which he met his old rival Harry Shaw. The latter was installed favorite and showed high lecd for the first half mile, but quit badly in the Iiomcstretch and Mine Thistle, racing into the lead on the stretch turn, held sway to the end to win from Republican, which also hunt: on gamely. Mine Thistle has always raced to his best form over the Melmont Park course. The finish of the third race was so close between the three placed horses that it was impossible to tell the winner until the numbers went up. Paddy Whack, the winner, showed smart improvement over his previous races. .lames AV. Coffroth, president and general manager of the Tijuana track, who is a visitor at Melmont Park, announced today a change in the dates for the opening meeting at Tijuana next fall. Racing there will open November 11 instead of November -1, as originally planned. This change was made to allow those who desire to do so, to remain at home to vote at the presidential election. Trainer 31. Daly reports that Mlankenburg, Archibald Marklies steeplechaser, broke down in his race yesterday and that it will be useless to again try to race him. Jockey J. P.utwell has been released by his contract employer, Andrew Miller. This followed the lefcat of Roamcr by Stromboli in yesterdays Municipal Handicap, in which Mutwells riding of Ruamcr dissatisfied Mr. Miller. Christopher .1. Fitz Gerald, who will act as one of the stewards for the coming meeting at Havre de Grace, will be absent from his post, on September lit, when he will go to the New York State Pair to officiate as judge of the Mrooding P.ureau yearlings. Algernon Daingerfield will act in his stead during his absence. As a result of the defeat of Romcr by Stromlmli yesterday in the Municipal Handicap, a race has been arranged for Saturday that is intended to bring the two rivals together once more. The conditions of the race are as follow:;: "Special sweepstakes, three-year-olds and over, by subscription of 0, starters to pay ,000 additional, with ,000 added, all to the winner; special weights; weather clear, track good; one mile and a half." Frizzle will probably be named in the overnight entries and later withdrawn, in order to conform to the rule concerning match races. Loftus will ride Mourner. Trainer Thomas Healey will take fourteen of R. T. Wilsons horses to Havre de Grace. The most of them will go there Saturday. C. H. Petlingill will again serve as presiding judge and steward at the Tijuana meeting the coming winter, according to .1. AV. Coffroth. Friar Mock has bfen insured by his new owner, John E. Madden, for $.10,000.
