BELMONT PARK TRACK GIVEN A WETTING. Ormesdalc Carries High Weight and Wins the Great Neck Handicap Fine Card for Today. Xew York, September 8. The extremely hot spell, which has prevailed for the past several davw, was broken today by a heavy downpour of rain, which came during the running of the third race anil continued until after the fourth race. It changed the going and rendered the weather quite a bit cooler. The Great Neck Handicap, for three-year-olds, went to Ormesdale, carrying the top weight of 1i1 pounds. Paddy Whack ran out badly on the stretch turn, when it. looked like he bad a chance. The game and consistent. Yankee Witch accounted for another purse when she scored in the first race over worthy opposition and carrying 121 pounds. It. was only after a hard drive that she finally got clear of Milkman in the closing strides to win going away. Old Broom took the measure of Republican in the fourth race and Ormead came again in the steeplechase after he appeared to be beaten to win in the final strides. It is hoped by all that the track will be dried out. sufficiently for the Ktromholi-Roumcr race tomorrow. The course, which always dr.v.s rapidly, probably will be good enough for this special sweepstakes event, which was conditioned for a fast or good track. Thos. V. Jab, of England, was a guest of George Keardou at the races today and expressed himself as being well pleased with the sport, despite the inclemency of the weather. T. J. Ilcaley will take jockey L. Mink with him to Maryland to ride the H. T. Wilson horses. At the conclusion of Maryland racing, the lad will report back to his contract, employer, John Sit 11 ford. Edna ICeniia was the target for a runup when she v-n the second race, Emil Ilcrr. advancing her from 00 to 00. She was retained. It was the first runup of the meeting. -Airs. J. Carson has purchased the two-year-old Phantom from G. A. Cochran and the horse, with Polroma, will be kept at Helmont Park until the opening of Laurel. October 1. ll.O. Ilolleiider has turned the horse Kilkenny, which he purchased at. the Sauford sale yesterday, over to M. J. Murphy to train. An excellent program is carded for tomorrow, which is the last Saturdays racing around New York this year. Quite a delegation of horsemen will leave Sunday for Havre de Grace, while those who have entries for Mondays racing at Helmont Park will, of course, remain over. Entries for Havre de Grace can be made at Helmont Park tomorrow. Secretary Fred Iiehberger will depart for Havre de Grace Sunday. All the horses owned by C. K. G.3Stfttngs have been turned out and retired from rifcing for the present, with one exception Sanscrit. The sou of Santry and Lilydale will be campaigned throughout Maryland in charge of trainer Charles Patterson. The others will be quartered at Hot Springs, Ark., until racing is resumed around Xew York next spring.
