NEARING THE END AT BLUE BONNETS. Copper King Wins the Valuable Blue Bonnets Breeders Stakes in a Close Finish. Montreal. Que., September 8. -The Blue Bonnets Breeders Stakes, the conditions or which calls for three-year-olds foaled in Canada, was featured bv the Montreal Jockey Club this afternoon. It was a dash of one mile and a half, to which the club added ,500. There were five starters and the finish resolved itself into a stirring contest between Copper King and Gala Water, in which the former came from behind and beat the Seagram colt a length, iala water might have won had he been ridden with better judgment. Harrington made the mistake of keeping him next to the inside rail for the entire race, where the footing was heavy, and when the final drive came Gala Water tired. Tin; closest finish of the afternoon attended the running of the second race, in which jockev K Robinson showed to good advantage. He gave Graphic a rousing ride and, after a long and hard stretch drive, landed her first bv a nose in advance of the imported colt Butterscotch II. Tom Horn made a runaway affair of the steeplechase. On her way to the post Sarolta ran awav and, when she was pulled up, Russell was unable to get her to the starting point. The stewards finally ordered t ho others away without her and her entry will probably be refused in the future. Jockey J. Metcalf has been engaged to ride for the Marrone Stable during the Marvlaml meetings. He will leave for Havre de Grace Saturday night. Edward W. Moore, in whose name the fast imported mare Arriet runs, has hail a successful season on the Canadian circuit. Mr. Moore has received additions to his string in a couple of imported two-year-olds belonging to Irving II. Wiieat-croft. The latter gentleman contemplates sending over a half dozen more to Mr. Moore next fall. They will be .selected from youngsters that have showed some; merit in public in England. The Moore establishment, will go into winter quarters at one of the Hot Springs tracks, nrobably Oak-lawn. Arriet has shown herself to be one of the fastest thoroughbreds racing on the Canadian circuit. Javato, -winner of the Provincial Nursery Stakes at Blue Bonnets on Thursday, was really bred by O. H. Chenault. The latter owned the. dam, Jaffa, and she was in foal to Hen Trovato when Samuel Xesbit of Montreal purchased her in Kentucky from Mr. Chenault. She was shipped to Montreal and foaled Javato at Mr. Ncsbitts; farm, which is located a short distance back of the Blue Bonnets race course. After foaling Javato Mr. Nes-bit disposed of Jaffa to some men who were purchasing horses for army remounts. He sold tiie mare for 00 and she was shipped, together with hundreds of other horses, to the other side of the Atlantic. Jockey W. Warrington, who had the mount on Obolus. the horse that was disqualified in the seventh race on Thursday, was suspended for the rest of the meeting. William Garth has arranged to ship what jumpers he has here to Toronto at the conclusion of the present meeting. The Dorval management has announced that there will be no steeplechases at Dorval and this is responsible for Mr. Garths action in shipping away from Montreal. Mr. Garth himself will leave for Xew York tomorrow night. Steeplechase jockey Fred Williams is expected to arrive from Xew York tomorrow morning to ride either Robert Oliver or Garter in the Hendrie Memorial Steeplechase. This is one of the big jumping races of the meeting and calls for a journey over the three-mile course.
