Louisville, Ky., September 27. The Churchill Downs autumn meeting of eight days opened this siftornoon under most favorable auspices with a jircat crowd present to witness the decision of an excellent carl of seven races. The Kails City Handicap, at three-iiiarters. with thirteen of the best fprinters in this section starting, and having n sirt value of ,170 to the winner, was the feature. It was won by Iconic .1. Longs speedy Kathleen, which showed the others the way for the entire race and won from Brmghurst. with Aogue lending Hodge for third place. The Maeomber pair Hank ODay and Id Crumii wen- the ones most in favor for the race, hut a tedious post delay, to which they contributed materially by bad acting and u poor wndolT for Ed Crump, cliniinated them from being serious factors in the running;. The AA II. Baker stable was conspicuous in the afternoons proceedings, starling olT by rapturing the opener with Amazon, which scored in lucky fashion. Reno, anotlier I.aker rciireseutative. nhowed improvement over her Douglas Iark essay ;ind won easily in the third race from Kapids. The latter was probably best, but had much the worst of the sendolf. The Maeomber stables Sunbonnot proved much the best of the youngsters that started in the fifth race and overhauled AVcsty Hogan in the last Mxleonth. AAcsty Ilogau was again an overwhelming favorite and threatened during the first half mile to spreadeagle the others, but tired badly in tin; stretch. Thirty pari-mutuel machines of the 5, 1, and ! types were used this afternoon for the accommodation of the specul. i lively inclined. Twenty-right cashiers were employed. Larry Itogonschuls circulated among the owners this afternoon, taking stabling applications from owners here desiring to nice at Latonia. Me lias assigned space to date for 095 horses, those including many that will come from Canada and Maryland. Manager John llnchnicistcr of Douglas Iark and Latonia will remain here until Saturday winding up Douglas Iark affairs before going on to Latonia to begin preparations for the opening of that track, where racing will begin one week from Saturday. Secretary Jack Campbell expects to have the initial Latonia program book in readiness for distribution by Monday next. A. L. Kirby. who was operated on for eye trouble and had his right eye taken out, was at the course this afternoon feeling much improved. G. AV. .1. Bissells racers, in charge of trainer .T. W. Gass, came in this morning from Lexington. Manager Matt .1. Winn will leave tomorrow for Laurel, when- racing will begin next Monday. Mr. AVinu expects a record meeting at the Maryland course. Mr. Winn stated that the directors of the Juarez track would meet at Laurel next week and would then perfect plans for the opening of the winter meeting and other matter pertaining to racing at the Mexican course. Mr. AVinu intimated that a list of stakes would be announced and that the purse offerings would be sufficiently attractive to insure a good number of horsemen shipping there. "Whatever plans were announced woidd be carried out. there being 00,000 in the treasury of the Juarez, track. It is likely that the pari-mutuel form of betting will be employed exclusively at Juarez next winter.
