KATHLEEN IN GRAND FOKM WINS THE FEATURE RACE AT CHURCHILL DOWNS FROM BRINGHURST IN FAST TIME. Bean Spillcr Takes His Race Jackstraw Noses Xatonia Out May W. Stays a Mile Many Stables Preparing to Go to latonia. L Louisville, Ky., October 3. George J. Longs crack filly Kathleen gave a sterling exhibition of speed and ganieness under adverse conditions -when she took up 124 pounds, thereby conceding actual :is well as scale weight to the others and won out in the last stride from Bringhurst, after being forced to sustain a hard drive that lasted through the entire stretch. The race was a handicap at five and a half furlongs and brought together some of the topnotchcrs in the sprinting division. The badly-acting Chalmers contributed to a post delay and, when they were dispatched, Kathleen was oft none too well and had to race wide in addition. Chalmers, Bringhurst and Dimitri alternated in the lead for a half mile, then Kathleen became a contender and, continuing on with great speed, managed to overhaul Bringhurst in the last stride. Dimitri was only a short margin behind, with the others, except Chalmers, which had been cased up in the last eighth, closely grouped. Aside from the handicap the card left nothing to enthuse over, some of the dashes having decidedly ordinary contestants for the 00 purses. Worlds "Wonder was the favored one in the opener :md fell a victim to Bean Spiller, which led for the entire way. The maidens that raced in the second race furnished an interesting finish, .Tackstraw just succeeding in beating Latonia, with Penrod following the pair closely. May W., favorite for the third race, the first mile race that lias been contested by two-year-old fillies in these parts, had a close call from defeat, Hester Smith being only a nose behind her at the finish. Elizabeth Thompson was given consideration for the race, but was caught in the barrier, causing her to be away poorly. She did not show enough speed in the running to warrant the belief that she would have been a winner even if away forwardly. An ordinary band made up the field in the fiftli race and Malabar furnished a surprise by winning as !iis rider pleased from Alberta True. Trainer W. R. Jennings has decided to ship only ten of the A. K. Macomber racers to Latonia for the meeting there. The remainder of the extensive string will be kept here and, after the finish of the Latonia meeting, the entire band will be shipped to Palmetto Park at Charleston, S. 0., where they will be wintered and prepared for next years campaigning. R. J. Mackenzies six racers will be shipped to Latonia next Friday and after that meeting will go into winter retirement. H. Fink today bought County Court from J. M. Shilling and Bingen from J. M. Henry, Jr. It is Finks intention to geld Bingen and Money and turn them out for the winter. He intends shipping the others in his string to Tijuana for the racing there. Jockey Frank Murphy, at the close of the Latonia meeting will ride for W. V. AValsh, who will assume his contract for the winter months. Senator J. M. Minor of Montana was among todays visitors and will remain for the rest of the racing here. Jockey II. II. Phillips was slightly bruised about the leg as a result of being unseated from Snowdrift. His fall was practically due to crowding. Cardigan was sold at private terms this morning by J. is. Respess to K. Pitt. This morning trainer W. C. Clancy of the Cor-rigan and McKinney stable shipped Coquette to Lexington, where she will go into retirement at tiie AVicklilTe Stud. The horses raced here in the Corrigan and McKinney colors will be shipped to Latonia next Thursday. Others who will ship on that day to the Mildale course are: J. W. Schorr, !. J. Iiong. J. II. Respess, John . Whitlow, W. J. Young, J. llmensetter and W. Perkins. As a result of his bad post behavior, Chalmers was placed on the schooling list.
