EXTENSIVE CALIFORNIA RACING PLANNED. That California will once again become the Mecca for the prominent turfmen and crack thoroughbreds of the country was the word brought to San Franseisco by James W. Coffrbth, on his return from a live-weeks tour of the eastern tracks. The president of the Lower California Jockey Club got into direct touch with hundreds of horsemen and has the assurance of attracting many star jockeys and horses for his Tijuana race meeting, which opens on November 11. .Coffroth will remain here until the end of the week and will work on organizing a controlling turf body in the West. According to tentative plans, there will a series of short meetings throughout the Northwest, Arizona and Nevada next season, in addition to the races Coffroth intends to stage at Los Angeles and San Francisco after the close at Tijuana in February. If this arrangement goes through it will provide racing practically the year round in the Far West. The possibility of staging a thirty-day meeting with the pari-mutuel machines at Tijuana in July was another bit of news given out by Coffroth. He was impressed by the working of the "iron men" on the Maryland and Kentucky tracks. Fact is, the prosperous condition of the game in the East was a revelation to Coffroth. Little trouble was experienced in inducing horsemen to come out here to race. Such jockeys as Jimmy Butwell, Roscoe Troxler, M. Buxton, Frank Murphy, Eddie Martin, Frank Keogh, Roscoe Goose and the McTaggart brothers signified their intention of being on hand for the opening at Tijuana. Prominent owners and their horses that have engaged stable accommodations are as follows: W. J. Spiers, with Buckshot, Edna Kenna and six others; II. J. Morris, Yodeling and others; J. G. Wagnon, Corsicau and others; W. T. Andersons Star Gift and ten others; W. P. Orr, Leochares and three others; C. Buxton, Old Broom and four others; Phil Chinn, with eight; R. I. Williams, with Kootenay, Morristown, Impressive and eight others; James Marrone, Golden Gate, Daingerfieid and a carload; Mrs. E. Arlington, with Republican and three others; Carroll Shilling, with Conning Tower. Silica and four others; H. G. Bedwell, carload in charge of Joseph Tigue; William Nestlehouse, Egmont and eight others; R. Dickinson, Guide Post, August Star, Lackrose and two others; Baker Brothers, with two carloads; Richard Ferris, with Anna Kruter, Miss Kruter and four others; K. Spence, carload; J. L. Gruber, carload of fourteen; G. A. Alexandra, with eight; J. Shields, with four; L. Becker, witii Striker and four others; J. L. Paul and Co., witli Polly II., Jawbone and six others, and II. Fink, with Fang and two others. Coffroth is expecting Samuel C. Ilildreth, Einil Ilerz, A. Zimmer and a number of other notables to be on hand, but he has had no definite word from them. At all events, he says there will be twice as many horses as were on hand for the past meeting, and there will be as many times more the number of handicap performers. The Jockey Club head is enthusiastic over the prospects of a banner meeting. The opening was postponed from November 4 to 11 because of election day falling on November 7 in California. Coffroth announces that races for two-year-old thoroughbreds will commence at the Tijuana track on the first day of the new year, as has been the custom. The Jockey Club of New York recently put through a rule that no two-year-old racing would be permitted before April 1. This was done to prevent training the juveniles in the cold weather. In California, where horses can bo trained the year round, the rale would have worked a hardship in preventing the development of young stock. The penalty for breaking the rule is simply barring tiu; horses from New York tracks during their two-year-old form. They will be eligible the following year. In respect to the wishes of western breeders, Coffroth decided to put on the races. San Francisco Chronicle.
