HODGE IN FORM ONCE MORE 1 i WINS THE FEATURE RACE AT CHURCHILL DOWNS IN TRACK RECORD TIME. Liberator Takes a Race at Last Midway Runs a High -Class Race at a Mile Louise Stone Shows Improvement. Louisville, Ky., October 4. W. J. Webers nodge established a new track record at Churchill Downs this afternoon for one mile and fifty yards, when he won the handicap in 1:41. The former mark was 1:42, made by John Bright in 1000. Hodge was a pronounced favorite over the throe others contesting the race with him, and displayed all of his old-time form to win from the lightly-weighted Typhoon, with Loo Skolny following next in order. Waterbass made his first start in this race in a long time and finished in a good enough manner to encourage the idea that he will stand training. Todays card showed a big improvement in the calibre of the starters and provided some interesting sport. The attendance was good. In the opening race, ltonanza, an expected contender, was a distant follower with his inexperienced rider at a loss how to ride him sueessf ally. Liberator, which had gotten away poorly, was allowed to race into a long lead and won with consummate ease from Droll, with Skiles Knob following. The last named was given a poor ride by Shilling and that rider also took occasion to bump Droll several times, of which jockey Uoag complained to the stewards. According to gossop Shilling became peeved over owner Finks failure to let him ride Kan G. in her last winning start, hence his interference with Droll this afternoon, it is said. The stewards after the race, had owner M. Shields and jockey Shilling before them to explain Bonanzas poor showing. Louise Stone, which in her last start was beaten soundlv, made a show of her opposition in the second nice after acting fractiously at the post. She was ridden by L. Gentry this afternoon, whereas in a former start Simpson had the mount on her. After the finish starter Morrisscy placed her on the schooling list. Midway again proved, himself a high-class colt when he curried tile steadying impost of 124 pounds and" wolf the mile handicap for two-year-olds in 1:40. Cudgel, after a hard stretch effort, just managed to overhaul Sol Gilsey, which had been in close pursuit of the winner from the start. Trainer W. 15. Jennings received definite advices today that his efforts to secure a call on jockey F. Robinson had failed. The riders father sent word that the youngster entertained a reluctance to leaving the service of Ed Trotter, his present contract employer. Trainer Jennings is in quest of some lightweight jockey to ride for his stable. Jockey Loftus will not report to the Macombcr stable until February 1.
