BIG AND MASSIVE HORSES AS STAYERS. That the Veneration filly would head this list of Sledmore prices and of the whole catalogue I never doubted. It was almost safe to assume, too, that Mr. Sanford would buy her from Butters to train along with Nassovian. I am almost surprised that the price did not exceed 4,000 guineas, for she is, in my humble opinion, the best of all the good ones that her dam has bred, and we may look forward to Venerations fine Tracery foal of this year doing initially well next year. The Snnstar colt out of Stolen Kiss is a really magnificent individual, and lie deservedly out-priced all of his sex, more particularly now that Hurry On has shown us how a big, massive chestnut can stay over a long course. Hitherto it had been accepted almost as an article of faith that bulky horses do not get more than a mile or a mile and a quarter, but it should always be remembered how Stockwcll spread-eagled his opponents for the St. Leger, and how well he stayed over a cup course. Hurry On is much such another as Stockwcll, so far as bulk, bone and power are concerned. A more recent massive horse, which was a splendid stayer, was Verneuil, which won Vase, Cup and Alexandra Plate, in smashing style, making all the running in each case. lie was lucky, by the way, to beat Silvio for the Cup. Archer, who rode the latter, having been misled by the favoritism of St. Christophe in the same stable as Verneuil, and regarding Verneuil simply as a pacemaker, until it was too late to catch him. Silvio proved himself the better horse when he beat Verneuil for the Jockey Club Cup over the Cesarewiteh course. "The Special Commissioner" in London Sportsman.
